The following is on abstract of the most Im
portant parts of the report of the Postoffi e
Department :
. The revenues of this department for the year
endidg June 30, 1885, were 514.5.50,154 70, ani
the expenditures 613,094,72 S 28, leaylng a sur
plus of 8861,430 42. The estimated expend!.
turea for the year ending June 30, 1867, are
$18,678,000. The revenues are estimated at
017,476,543, leavings deficiency of $1,207,457.
For thin deficiency no special appropriation
will be required, so the standing appropriations
for the last three yearn, under acts of March 3
1847, And March 5, 1451, amounting to 6.2,100,-
,
000, are unexpended. The exunber or - postace
stamps leaned du• ing theyear, was 3,07,419,455,
representing 612,500,787 50; stamped envelopes,
25,040,425, representing 8724,135 00; stomped
wrappers, 1,165,7.50, representing 82,3.515 00;
mattlng In all $12,847,437 50—an increase
of 61,073,108 over the previous year. The
amount sold was 812,359,727 3.5. being $1,623,-
138 27 more than the previous rear.
The introduc ion of stamped envelopes bear
ing a request for the r. turn to the writers of no
el:bated letters has considerably Increased the
sale of envelopes, and is believed to have di
minished the returns to the Dead Letter office.
• To encourage the purchase of rep.; rnoelopes,
the law should be changed 60 as to allow the
return of such letters to the writers free of past.

stamia attached, It Is submitted whether the
Postmaster GI neral should not be authorized In
