The democratic :organ of Seeks county
explains the cause of this unseasonable ac
tivity: It Is to take measures for entering
early and with vigor upon the gubernator
ial canvass. The democratic discomfiture
is attributed, not to the effete condition of
the party, not to its lack of confidence in
itself, nor to the decadence of pop.
ular regard for it, but to a temporary dis
position to slumber. It was caught nap

by the Philistines, and overcome.
Now It means to rouse itself, like another
Samson, and put forth ail its trength. It
means to commence early, keep at it, t nd
not to relax its efforts until the ballot-boxes ,
close stenndown on the second Tuesday of
next October. These are chivalrous maul

tually be dead for a long time without
knowing it.

UPOII. They show that the war has not destroy
ed the commerce of the western rivers, as had
been erroneously supposed. The great depots
of this commerce are fit. Louis. Pittsburgh Cin
cinnati, New Orleans and LOuisville, in the
order named. The pre-emineneo of St. Louis
and Pittsburgh is owing to their terminal
points of the water route of the great transit
tram the seaboard to the Mississippi. Begin
ning at Philadelphia, this transit reaches Pitts
burgh by railroad, and there the water route
begins. How east this Interest is we see in the
prosperity of the intermediate cities of Wheel
ing. Cincinnati, Louisville and Evansville. Not
withstanding all that has been said of the mis
erable navigation of the Ohio, this table abases
that Lhe commerce of that river still remains
the principal item in the trade of the west, de
