THE PULPIT AND THE:THEATRH.•
There is a r eg ular war going no azalast the
Theatre, In Chicago, the Rev. Mr. RAI - rims;
haying led oil In a sermon against it as corrupt
and demoralizing, The actors and actresses
used theatage to retort upon him; but, strange
to say, the pulpit itself has come to theirrescue,
for on Sunday last Rev. R 0172111 COLLTUR took
up the debate and preached In Unity church, In
that elty,,a sermon In defense of the Theatre.
in his clew the Theatre la a necessary and
useful part of the mechanism of society. While
it amuses and delighta people of all classes, it
reaches and teaches, interests and touches, and
elevates those who arc not accessible to other
intellectual and moral halloonces. It belongs to
.. the same category with poetry, painting and
1
' music. It la now denounced and condemned,
Pest as those aria have been condemned, as in
conahrtent with religion and morals; but. It will
hereafter be recognized by those who now thus
denounce It, as requiring only to be 'properly
1 understood and rightly managed la order to be
come an agency of noble pleasure and unmixed
. good. Such is, generally, the theory of the
drama which Hr. Cozzrxe. expounds.
We do not know who Mr. Cou.reu is, nor to
. what denomination he belongs ; but we venture
. to say that he will stand alone In this matter.
: No clergyman wlllletuttain him in it, nor will the
religious sentiment of the country. No man
familiar with the drama in this country and in
England will venture to class it with poetry,
~ painting and music. The drama has fairly no
tank with them. There are those who nate
rally and with some propriety defend it against
the frequent attack. made upon it, bnt a elsrgy
. mart is entirely out of his place in their ranks ;
and no amount of pulpit oratory, nor soy other
kind of eloquence, will sitillee to lift It Into a
healthful moral Influence, or give It, is Ito those
:, who know. it ? a reputation different from that
which every of serving man knows it has ac
quired.
The Liability of Foreign Bondholders.
The decision of Chid' Justice Chase, silting
at tildi ;milts In the Circuit Coca of Maryl, nil,
which has been re'erred to In the telegraphir re
ports of the Associated Press, with not very
clear understanding of the points decided, is
really of great Importance. The Court decides
that the United States income tax i, not cluo-7,e
-ali.e against interest coupons attached to the
bonds of a railroad company, when the same
are the property of a foreigner residing abroad.
Limber words, It is decided that Americans on
if areto be taxed under the Internal Revenue
law upon their incomes. aud that-where inter
est upon dividends is due to foreigners from
American corporations they shall not deduct
the five per cent.. as has heretofore been done.
tinder this decision there will be lit:Barter a
considerab,c falling off in the return of the
taxes from corporations, and it is not amiss to
suggest that a door for the frandaliXat with
holding of taxes duo the United States by some
corporations may be opened. A corpdration in
a genuine case where a foreigner fields the
bond in steel:, is not charged with the tax, 09
was fiat represented. The foreign bondholder
or shareholder is simply paid the full amount
him, without reduction.
