THE SIIENANDIMH The English authorities have released the pirates of the Shenandoah at “perole." These men were either guilty or innocent of piracy. If guilty, why wain they relea•-ed ? If innocent, whylverc they not absolutely discharged, instead of being parokd 1 • It may be said that tho English authorities do not reganl themus - pirates at all, but simply as prisoners of war.: Dot they ...were '..not our prise oners,.for wg did cirOapture them; nor could they be the prisotters of the English, with whom they were not at war. So that dodge will not suffice. If it was right to surrender to us the Shenan doah, the Captain and crew should have been surrendered with her. and if It was wrong to surrender the - crew, it was just as wrong to sur render their vessel- 'When our Government makes requisition npori England for an escaped burglar, the demand cannot be satisfied by a mere surrender of the burglar's tools.. The release of th ls piratical grew Is another instance of had faith on the part of the British Government towards ours, and goes to swell the already fast growing indignation of our people towards that Government. When the day of reckoning comes, this assuredly will not be for gotten. ENGLAND AND THE ALABAMA Official documents, hitherto suppressed, have been published; which show beyond doubt that the British Government Is responsible for allow ing the Maharani.° put to sea, after It had been fully Informed by our ralubiter, respecting her diameter and designs, the manner in which her ownership had passed Into the hands of the rebels, and the-danger to which our commerce would be subjected from lice. This, of course, constitutes a valid claim, which can be enforced at any time, and which will give special paint to the correspondence sow mooing on. Mr. Sew ard has always kept prominently in view the riot that we should insist upon reparation for damages done by this roil - Steer, and even dar ing the war, our case ens made np and most forcibly urged by Mr. Adams. It is difficult to see where England, when Judged by the prece dents which she herself his estaMished in ref erence to other powers, will find even a pctext for evading our demands. Commons IN CITIEn.—It seems now getting to be felt that there ought to bs colleges and means of carrying a course of education, class ical or stlemific, as may be preferred, bat per fect as far as it goes, and to carry students to'a graduating point to every large city. THE SHENABDOAH. Letter from Capt. Waft' to Earl Russell THE BRITISH GOVERNMENT ORDER HIS UNCONDITIONAL RELEASE• The Crew Paid Off in American Dollars and Sent dahore wknorafs mrrza TO r.Lui. nussmr, • In the letter which Capt. Waddell addressed to Earl Russell immediately on arriving in Ifite Mersey, the corsair chief thus attempt& to Jus tify his conduct In destroying American vessels long after the war had closed "In obedience to orders, I found myself in the Arctic and Oehotsk Seas, far removed from the ordinary channe:s of commerce, and, In conse quence of this awkward circumstance, I was engaged in acts of war until the Bah of June. I was Ignorant of the reverses &effendi); ,the Confederates, and the total obliteratiOn•of the government under which I acted. I received the first Intelligence of the downfall of the Confederate cause on the lid of August, from I the British bark Barraeonta, and desisted Im. mediately from further acts of war until I could communicate with a European port, and learn If the intelli, genee was true. I could not have been sensible that the tales told by Ameri can ships were true, but merely upon the state ment of a British Captain I diligently sought fora precedent in law writers for guidance In the intim control, management and final dis posal of the vessel, but found none." Finding the authority questionable under which he act ed, he Immediately ceased cruising, and shaped her course for the Atlantic. Ile did not feel justi fied in destroying the vessel, but, on the contra. rv, thought that the 'ship should revert to the American Government. Ile therefore sought Livery.); to learn the news, and If not without foundation, to surrender the ship, with her guns, stores and apparei complete, to the British Government, for such disposition as it should deem proper. IIL'ILIUMSDEII Or Tile SIIEN/INDO/11 TO TITE:UNITED I=l On the 10th Inst., the Shenandoah was ane nt:Wend to the American Consul wno took for• mai pqrseas lon and placed her under Captain Fosse I.N. with a crew of his own eLleetioa, to be conveyed to Sew Yore. RELEASE or TILE carve. At 0 o'clock on] the erculog of the 4th, Capt. VNTLII. of Her Majesty's ship Donegal, re r std from London to liberate such of the crew of the Shenandoah as were not British subjects. On inquire It was found that there was no Britleh subject on board, at least no one claimed that honor, although the accent of many seemed to the contrary. It appear! that the Shenandoah did not enter the Tagus or ship a new crew at Lisbon. The disembarkation presented a strange scene of excitement. Rejoicing was visible on the conntenances of easel's and men, and many made free boasts of the fact that the Shenando ah displayed the last Confederate hag. They good in busy groups about the landing stage, eagery canvassing their future prcspetts. Most of them seemed puzzled by their owe position. flow they came to be liberated, and on what 'grounds, they were not very clear about, though at the fact itself they were all particularly ela ted. To inquiries made by Individuals among the crowd of bystanders, both officers and men replied that they had teen liberated uncondi tionally to go whithersoever they pleased. As the intelligence reached town crowds of people - assembled on the stage, those who had Southern proclivities making ttimuselses par ticularly agreeable to the men of the Shrum,- &rah, and a general curiosity being manifest to hear the details of the operations of the noto dons usage]. So many a yarn of daring adventure was unwound, while the luggage was being packed or vet:della provided. Daring the last seven months, some of the crew said,.this men were particularly anxiouslo get ashore, as they bad become tired of their wild life; and from the conversation of -some, It seems pretty cer tain that aboard the Streanndrxel the news of the ceesation of the late war was I elMrei, however lacking positive Information may hare been. Oee unfortunate, who bad been taken from a whaler sunk by the .57tenco.datA, seemed glad enough to he suit of her. Altogether, some 130 men disembarked on the landing-atage, one sick man being left in charge of the officers of the 'FCRTISEII lIIRTICI From the Lit trrxot Cahrier, „ Early last evening the officers and crew of the ,hlenandoeit were liberated upon parole, and landed at Liverpool. We arc informed that the order for parole was received by Capt. Payatex, of the Dogegal, early ip the at ornoon, and that immediately after It .11.6 communicated to Capt. Waddell. Capt.. Waddell then came on shore and had en Interview with some Sontherd gen tlemen. alter which he returned to hie ship and paid off and diacharged the crew. At 7 a'elock the recc telt the Shenandoah In the heck Ferry Com pan)'s steamer Bee, and at • o'clock they were landed upon the George', Landing-stage. But few spectators were present to witness the arrival of the crew so renowned for their ex ploitr, owing doubtless to the fact that their parole was not known even to themcclves until a short time before their landing, Each of them brought on shore a large quantity of luggage, and they appeared to have no lack of money —facts which appeared to attest that their long attire had net been unrewarded. The news of their arrival soon spread, and crowds ofnpersons collecting on the stage formed theme SelVea Into groups around the sailors, and en deavored to draw them into conversation. These attempts, however, rarely succeeded., and when they did It was evident that the men spoke rather to evade curicsity than to satisfy it. The men, Indeed, appeared to be themselves quite in the dark as to their position, and though under the impression that Ley had done with the Shenandoah for good and all, ata. peered to labor under a fear of committing themselves or their officers by some rash state meet. Some of them eagerly questioned the bystanders na to what the English people thought of the Shenandoah, acid two or three Of them expressed the greatest surprise that the offieera of that vessel should even have been suspceted of pursuing their work of destrue (lon weth.a knowledge of the termination of the war, The men, though exhibiting a marked reticence on matters connected with the discip line of the ship, speak freely o 1 the circum stances which led the Shenandoah to terminate her privateerine career, namely the meeting with the ship liorraeouta, which the crew are unanimous In alleging as the first source eh rough which reliable information was re ce ved of the termination of the war. - . . Many of fie e'er of the Shenandoa are Litrr• pool man, arid these immediately on being landed drove off to their homes. of the others a few went to private boarding-houses, and others to the Sailors' Rome.
