Many years The authorities have experienced
considerable opposlttoa In attempting to col

squatters,' holding from two• to flay acres of
land, which, by ordinary bdustry, could be
made valuable, and the natives secure a good
living and have plenty to sell sad obtain money
to Fey the taxes with. The objection to paying

with each year.
The tax collector of the Bt. Thomas-in-the-

take a force and make another attempt. Bab
teunelat4. tame of the negroes made an appeal
to the Magistrate's Court, sell appeared before
Charles Anthony Price, the magistrate, and
denounced the attempts to collect taxes from
them.
The magistrate gave a positive decialon
against them. From this Coort they appealed
to the Superiar Magistrates' Court, which was
prealded over by Baron Von Elttleholdt. This
magistrate also gave a decision similar to that
ofJustmernee, and alto administered a rebuke
to them for their Indolence, and . stated there
vras.to reason why they should wit cultivate the
lands they held, and have money so that the
taxes could be paid, and they could live more
comfortable and have their condition generally
bettered. The neg - roes smarted under his ad
dress, and some disturbance wee occasioned. in
Court.
The next season of the Magistrates' Court.
the opponents again went before Jaseice Price
and renewed their efforts to get the taxes abated.

became so violent that the officers ejected them
from 'he Comt. The regular business of the
Court was then proceeded with,, and shortly
afterwards smoke was discovered Issuing

Thosein attendance made an effort to leave
the building, and they found that the doors and
windows had been barricaded on the outside.
Theymade several unsuccessful attempts to get
out, amid the
