We have looked in vaia fdr any item of
news, even the slightest, to give confirms
tiou to the report sent to Washington from
Vlrgbriathatthere was danger of a negto
insurrection in that Btate. Not a single
fact has transpired to justify such a reprrt,
or to Warrant a belief to any quarter that
We negroes entertained any such purpose.
The report probably originated among
the ex-slaveholders, who construe the ex
istence of a determined epirit among the
negroes not to be imputed u; on, to be luclp
lent Insurrection. With them, any asser
tion of manhood on the part of the negm,
Is equivalent to open revolt; and if, as we
trust they have, the freedmen of Virginia
have rhoorn the proper pluck in resisting
the efforts of their late mastersto practi
cally re-enslave them, it is not to be won
dered at that some half crazy loons should
stand aghast and cry out "Insurrection "
Under slave rule, if a slave resisted so
slight a thing as a slap on the cheek, it was
thduglit prima facie evidence of the exist
ence of a conspiracy to rebel; and now
when not one of them will allow themselves
to be chastised or defrauded, the-evidence
of "Insurrection" must, to the minds of
the woman-whipping chivalry, be condu
cive.
Our only wonder is that the head of tha
Freedmen's Bureau permitted himself to
be drawn into the trap set for him by these
men who are determined - that the negro
shall not be free. He has,.ft seems, an,
thorizea the revival of that infamous slave
Ins itution, the Patrol—the very thing the
ex•slave masters wanted. The Patrol was,
with them, one of the most powerful is--
struments of oppression. As long as it was
in. force, no negro was safe out of his
house after dark; and under its re -estab
llshment it will be made the means of in •
flirting every possible , cruelty upon the
freedmen. The laborer on his way from
one plantation to another, after his day's
work, to see wife: or children, will be ar
rested, imprlsOned, and punished as only
slave drivers knew how to punish, and
thousands of pretexts will be conjured up
for arresting ny the patrol any one who, by
asserting his independence, becomes ob -
non OTIS to the late ruling class.
We object to this whole system of treat
log the negro as a speciality, and dealing
with him as a dangerouselement In society.
All be Wants is to be let alone. Give him
a fair chancear.d he will take rare of
self. Ali be .yrants is protection agatnst
those who, have been his oppreasors, and
security in the enjoyment of hls freedom.
Fie is tot to be treated as a babe, or a child,
but as a man, With all the rights and privi
leges Of a man, and with all the duties of a
man upon hint. The whites of the South
Lave got to learn this lesson, sooner or la
ter, and the sooner the better. The Freed
men's Sulean can very properly give It 3 at
tention to imparting this lesson to them,
and it . will then sectue Itself from the dis•
grace paf establishing patrols and relapsing
into the other barbarities of slavery.
