Ocean, where about eighty vessels, coru•
prising the whole bulk of the Arctic what-

the whole smry of the failure of the confed
eracy, on the ground that it was, published
in "northern - papers" only.
The log of the General Pike thus records
the capture of the vessel
"On the morning of the 26% of Jane, at
half-past six o'clock, the General Pike,
being in latitude G 4 deg. and 4.2 min west,
saw a steamer on our star-board quarter,
steering directly for 11P. At half past seven
o'clock the steamer tame close under our
stern and ordered me to come on board with
my papers. She proved to be the English
pirate, thief or robber, Sea Sing, called
dhenandoah. Waddell, the pirate cider,
told mehe should bond the General Pike .

Nye, makes this statement:
"About half past 1 a. in., on the 20th, as

Behring's Straits, between Indian Point
and St. Lawrence Heeds, we sighted a steam
er coming in from the south, under steam,
with all sails furled. We did not suspect
anythinverong at first, and to orifiliour abe
came along aide . of us. The steamer then
hailed, telling us to brliag to. which we
did, and a boat came aboard of us. A prize
master, who came In the boat, ordered the
matter, Captain Cooley, and his officers to
go on board hia vessel, saying that we were
a prize. to .the Confederate steamer Shenan
doah. We went on board and signed a pa-

Our fourth mate refused at first to alga the
parole, and the first lieutenant of the She
nandoah had him put in Irons. He after
wards signed it, and was released, The
Shenandoah then steamed after the Cathe
rine and the Nimmd,'which were just ahead

were then all ordered into the boats, twelve
in number, which were taken in tow by the
Shenandoah, and the three ships et on fire.
The Shenandoah then steamed to the wind
ward after three other ships—the Gipsey,
leabelinui General Pike, which were in
right. They took each of these verw-la
and sent prize masters on board. Tae
Gut Pike being the poorest of the lot,
was t en bonded, and all the crews put an
board her. They then ran alongside the
Isabel, unbent her sails, took out what pro
visions they wanted and set her on fire like
the teat. They then steamed to the. east
ward after the two other vessels which
were In sight. They had destroyed the
Susan, Abigail and the General Williams be
fore they came up to us. They broke open
the trunk of Captain Cooley, bat the stew
ard of our ship had taken the money out of
it abd concealed It, with his watch, on his
person. We sere .11owed nothing but a
clothes bag apiece in the cabin, no trunks
or chests being permitted, they did not al
low the men even their bedding. It was
about twelve m. when they told us to start
for San Francisco. Th last we saw of the
pirate she was steering eastward after the
other two ships. The whole fleet not de
stroyed previously by the Shenandoah, or
scared off from the Gulf of Anadyr by the
story of Captain Nye, were tam to
the north and east of us, and out of the
eighty vessels I think fifty or more will be
destroyed. We had provisions enouth on
board the General Pike, but were short of
water and had to put into Plover Bay fcr
water, on the return home.
We suffered exceedingly for want of no.

one from each Senatorial District, was appoint.

the soldiers of 1661 and 1862, having enlisted
with little or no bounty. should receive one hun
dred and sixty acres of land, and urging upon
the next Congress the Justice of maintaining

ENGINEERS engaged in surveying a route
for a railroad to connect Franklin, Penn
sylvania, with the Philadelphia and Erie
Road, have arrived at Franklin, liming sur
veyed a route of One hundred and thirty-one
and a-half miles in length, with maximum
grade cut of forty feet per mile, and marl
mum curves of aix degrees For forty miles
they were on a continuous coal bed, the
number of workable seams from three to
five, and varying from twenty-eight Inches
to eleven feet In • thickness. Salt springa
also abound in the region, and iron ore is
found in abundance.
A LARGE meeting of working men was
