Narrow F.ocape from Drowning—Heroism
On Monday evening, a bright little bay, aged
eight years, eon of is gentleman in Manchester,
made a very narrow escape from drowning--be
lag reeened by his sister, a girl lime fire years
his senior. The circumstances were as followe
The girl had been on a visit to some friends In
West Greenville, Mercer county, and on ratan:l
ing to her home, and exchanging congratula.
lions 'alit her parents, inquired for her little
brother, who was absent at play, her mother re
marking that he had probably gone to the ricer
shore. The girl, being desirous of seeing hlm l
startrd down to the river bank (the river wash
log the rear of the lot on which the dwelling
stands) and found him bathing in company with
some little playmates, alongside of a skiff belong
ing to the family. She gently reproved him for
going into the Water, contrary to tie instruc.
lions of his parents, but with a childlike glee
and a boyish design to exhibit hi= proficiency,
he exclaimed, "1 can SWIM I" at the same time
"going through the motions" as best he could.
It so happened that the skiff had been moored
alongside of a hole about four or fire feet deep,
into which he unwittingly shored himself., and
immediately sunk. Ills distressed appearance
on !Wag to the surface at once revealed 114
danger to his sister, who, instead of becoming
alarmed and fleeing away, as did his little play
mates, tterolcly plunged into the water, edging
the side of the skiff with one hand,
and with the other awaiting an opportunity to
rescue Ler drowning brother; who had sunk
from view a second time. As he rose up again,
she grasped him tightly and dragged him out,
at the risk of her own life. He was almost ax
hanged, bit after being carried 40MS ha soon
revived, and is nothing the worse for his fear.
ful adventure., It Is very rave that one so young
as this little girl, can be found to exhibit the
same degree of quickness to comprehend dan
ger, and the heroism necessary to avert it. She
was undoubtedly the means of saving the
life of her brdther, whn should he live to
manhood, must ever cherish towards her the
tenderest affection.
The Moral Aspects of Oltdom
