Sexism. Charge Against a Court Officer.
'John Clo ss, a tavern keeper of West Pitts
burgh, has made an Information before Alder-
Man Strain, charging one of the tipstaves of the
Court of Quarter Sessions with extortion, or in
common parlance 'levying black maid." Mr.
Chess' allegation is, that the officer in question
came to bin tavern, in October but, and inform
ed biro that he bad been guilty of selling liquor
on Sneday, cad wasliable to be returned, but
if he weuld pay tee djlars the matter would ha
made all right. Tea money was paid, and the
Sabre operation was repeated In November—a
• similar sum having been paid as • 'hush-money."
Nothlus more was beard of the onions until
a youth or two since, when ho made
another demand for money, which was
refused, er.d being threatened with prose
carillon, be comnited counsel and was advised to

rapt has been issued, but the officer has no: yet
been so - rested. it to, perhaps, proper to state
that the parry accused, who has done a g,aod
&al of business in the way of briaging
Illegal liquor sellers before the court, has hereto•
fore maintained a good reputation for honesty,
and we have no doubt that be will meet this
charge manfully. We withhold his name for
thopresent, as no hearing has yet been had, and
the:facts are not yet fully ascertained.
Shooting Affray on at. Clair Fttreet.
About noon to-day, a difficulty occurred be

which resulted in the latter being shot In the

one or two of which lodged In Burr's forehead,

Attempt to Shoot an Officer.
On Sunday night, officer Smith saw a man
named Peter McAfee, on Wylie street, actingba a
very dbordeffitnanner. He was' quite drunk, and
very turbulent. The officer tint admonished the
man to keep quiet and go home, but this seemed
ratherto aggranto than pacify him, end ho was
taken Into custody. A serious difilculty then
ensued, as several bystanders Interfered to pre
vent an arrest being made, and the officer alleges
that One of the-number ( William Rafferty) cried
ant, " Shoot !" let him have It !" etc. McAfee
bad drawn a pistol, and made several attempts to
shoot the &facer. Ile was finally conveyed to
the Mayor's office, and this morning, after a
heroine, war fined twenty five dollars and costs,
which .he paid.
An,information was also made a:alest Wm.
Rafferty, and others, for interfering with the
racer. Rafferty was arrested and held fora
hearing this evening. Re alleges that he inter
fered to save the officer, and Instead of crying
"sheet," "igthho have it," said "don't shoot—
let, me hare the pistol" The, facts, however,
will be developed-in the hearing.

The oil developments going on in the neigh
borhood are attracting great attention ever since
IE6I. The citizens have been assured that oil
exists under their farms by a strike which pro
duced two or three harreLs of good lubricating
oil; but, as this well was abandoned, there was
no Camber effort then made to develop the terri
tory. Recentirleeses have been made and now
wells sank, none of which ore sown less than
shree hundred feet, and in each, the oil show is
alt that could he desired.
One well In the Immediate vicinity of this
riace is owned and managed by a Pittsburgh
company. The manager, Perry ahem, one
of oar well known citizens, told ma that the
well was down four hundred and twenty feet;
that at this depth they had Just got through the
second sand rock and finding the oil so abun
dant they resolved to pabe the well at once, and
to forego the original plan of waiting till they
got through the third sand rock. I noticed ev
ery thing was on the ground ready to prepare for
pumping and retaining the precious field. The
tubing pump and tank were there, ready to be
put in position, and it would he Jew to say that
not only Mr. Bonham, who Dm e large Interest
in the well, but all who have visited It say that
the prospects of a good well never were better.
As this well le the first one that has been sunk
in tilts part of Crawford county, unusual interest
attaches to It. It Is looked upon as a sort of teat
of the county round-about It in which evidences; '
of oil have long been known to exist. Another
company formed in the neighborhood Is sinking
a well a ew miles above Hartelown, and are now
down over three hundred feet. In 1861, oil at
the depth of one hundred feet was obtained here
at the rate of a barrel a day; so this company
feel very sanguine of a good well, and the indi
cations are now of the very best kind, and hare
been becoming stronger an the well becomes
deeper.
There are other Wells in the neighborhood ba.
are not yt t quite so deep as the two above re
ferred to, and In them Is Is also said that the •
is every prospect of finding paying quantities o
the precious
Naturally enough there is an intense Interest
manifested In this community In the saecess of
these wells. Thee are the tirsi that have been
tnrk, and as this county was the first to yield
ell In any thing like paying quantities, this part
of It is also thought to contain as much as any
ether part, for the ster'ace and configuration of
ihe country all f CCM to point that way.
As these developments are private enterprises
truly, and In no part owned by any of the many
stock companies, there can be no purpose to ex
aggerate for the purpose of puffins stock; all
that I desire In this letter Is to give your read
ers en Idea of what Is going on here in the
oil
way- and to show that although speculation in
worthless stoeks Is at an end, development of
the country still ernes nn, and our earnest hope
Is that this enterprising stem no commendably
exercised airy meet with the reward ft so richly
deserves. I hints , to be able In a few days to
have the pleasure of noting a strike that will
pat beyond cavil the existence of oil in this new
quiet and reunite, although pleasant part of
Craw ford county. More anon.
