Dead Body of a Child Found-91dgtaar
Case of InfantEck/O.
On Monday night, as soma workmen were en
gaged in cleaning OM a privy on the premises of
Jacob Grimm, on Cherry alley, one door from
the corner of Seventh etreet, they discovered Mel
body of a child, In a perfectly rude state, and
evidently but a few daye old. The fact waacom.
inculcated to Alderman Donaldson, who in
formed the Coroner of the circumstance this
mornirg, but as that officer is lying sick the Al
derman proceeded to hold an Inquest. Being
unable to Mid any witnesses, he adjourned the
Investigation until the afternoon.
In the meantime,', Stayor trowry was informed
of the finding of the body of the Infant; and ha
at once put officers Thornburg and Culp at work
to investigate the cue. Officer Thornburg visl•
tad the house of Ile. Grimm, and found one of the
daughters, Elizabeth Grimm, In rather delicate
health. lie informed the old lady that he wished
to see her daughter alone, and when the mother
bad left the room he Informed Elisabeth that he
was a physician, seat to ascertain the cause of
her ninon; that If she told him the truth he
would he satisfied; and If not, ebo would
have to submit to a personal examination. '
The girl at font hesitated, bat finally confessed
that she bad become a mother Jest a week ago,
and had throws the child into the cerisplol. The
most singular fact connected with the affair was,
that the girl had been living all the time at
home, and that none of the faintly, not-even her
mother, was aware of her actual condition. She
stated that when she berme Ili she renalred to
the yard, and after the child was born she threw
It Into the cesspool. On being asked whether It
had been born alive, she stated that It cried once
or twice, but wee dead bebire she finally disposed
of It.
Sloe also made a fail cenfessim in regard to
the paternity of the child. From bee statement
It appearathat she bad become enamored of •
song min named Philip Stealer, and sought an
Introduzion to him through a female friend and
confidant named Maggießerry, whoresided next
door to her. Phillp's cousin had been paying
attentions to Maggie, and It was thcnidht an ac.
quaintsceeship between Lizzie and Philip would
be mutually agreeable. They were Introduced

hi • short time after, these ardent lovers quar
reled, and Llscie was left to look sot for herself
as beet she could. l'hillp had promised to mar

but ahe had never made known her condition to

her fearful secret In her own breast. She Natal

however, bad been so distended by gas that he
could not determine whether the child had breath.

Mayor's office.

which led to his arrest, brit. did not pretend to
deny the paternity of the child.
bilaa Grimm Is of very respectable parentage,.
and her character Is good among her neighbors
and acquaintances. She Is twenty years of age,
but tactless and simple in her manner. She
seemed to feel very keenly the situation In which
she has bets placed, and wept long and bit.
rely. She will be committed to jell to answer
a charge of , minder, as the offense of in
fanticide Is net one which admits of bail. 'lf
