SATURDA.T, JUNE 24, 1863
RELIGIOUS INTELLIGENCE
The National Council of Congregational
churches met at Boston, in the Old South
-Congregational church, on Wednesday af
taxmen, the 14th. This old edifice, the
"cradle of the Congftatiemal Order of Pu
ritan churches," said to be thirty-six
years older than the Declaration of
dependence. The Council was permszentlyi
organized by the choice of Gov. Bucking
ham, Connecticut, as Moderator, and Hon.
C. G. Hammond, of Chicago, and Rev. Dr.
.1. P. Thompson, of New York, Assistants,
and a corps of six Secretaries. Thursday
morning the opening sermon was delivered
by Rev. Dr. Sturtevant "on the old paths,"
based on Jer. VI. 16. The scope of the
discourse, which was strongly denomina
tional, were the difficulties that occur in
transplanting New England instructions to
the West. In the course of his remarki it
was alleged that colportage as a missionary
enterprise was a failure, and that the true
method of missionary operations were to
plant churches and to found colleges. ' Tho
main portion of the day's session was devo
ted to perfecting the roll of the Council, and
hearing the addresses of Rev. Drs. Vaugh•
an, Raleigh, and Massie, representing the
Congregationalists of England, and Rev
Dr. Willis, of Canada. Shortly after the
opening of Tinusday morning's session,
Rey. T. binned, of Paris, and Rev. J.
Thomas, of Liverpool, delegate for the
Congregational churches of Wales, spoke
with happy effect. Henry Ward Beecher
moved the appointment of a discriminating
committee to reply to the salutations of the
delegates from foreign bodies. It is sup
posed the motion had reference to the ante
cedents of at least one of the delegates.
An address to the President of the United
States was voted, in which.the spirit of loy
alty was largely infused. The Committee
on the "Declaration of Faith" in thelere.
port, assume that their functions do not re
quire them to draw up a confession of faith.
They affirm their doctrinal position was in
the main Calvinistic. The Savery and
Westminister confessions had been accrot
ted symbols. The following declaration is
made as a ground of hope and belief:
"God, whose being, perfections, and gov
ernment are partially made known to us
through the testimony of his works and of
conscience, has made a further revelation of
Himself in the Scriptures of the Old and
New Testaments—a revelation attested at
the first by supernatural signs, and con
firmed through all the ages since by its
moral effects upon the Individual soul, and
upon human society; a revelation author'.
tatiye and float In this revelation God
has declared Himself to be the Father, the
Son, and the Holy °horst; and he hail
manifested his love for the world through
the incarnation of the Eternal Word for
man's redemption, in the sinless life, the
expiatory sufferings and death, and the res.
erection of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Sav
ior; and also in the mission of the Holy
Ghost, the comforter, for the regeneration
and sanctification of the soulsof men." A
report of a committee on Church Polity was
read which was referred to a large
committee for further consideration.
It recognized Councils but not con-•
sociations, and allowed each church to
elect as many elders as It chose. Consider
able time was taken up, extending beyond
the usual hour of adjournment, in hearing
the report on evaugelization in the West
and South. -The committee say "we are
sire that Gad chose and called the early
fathers of New England to be ,the founders
of this nation, as we are that He chose Ab
raham to be the founder of His ancient peo
ple." More systcurin the work of home
evangelization was recommended as abso.
lutely necessary,, Future efforts shield not
belindied to organizing churches from ma
telala on hand, or aiding churches to lie
come self sustaining. There should be no
wasting for invitations. Committees were
appointed to consider the foregoing papers,
and report.
—The Bishops of the Methodist Episco.
pal Church made provision some time ago
for the work of reconstruction in the South,
as the opening of Providence would
indicate. Bishop Clark was charged
with the duty of visiting Ten
nessee to see what could he done. He
made the visit and reported favorably,
whereupon It was resolved to re-organize
the old Holstein conference, whose bounds
were mainly in Tennessee, which had sece
ded in 1644, when the Church divided on
the slavery question. The rebellion hav
ing destroyed this evil, sad nproo:ed the
foundations of the M. E. Church, South,
the first day of June was fixed upon for re.
organizing the Conference, at Athena,
Tenn., the Bishop in the meantime trans
ferred several ministers from the work in
the North, to form a nucleus to accomplish'
the object in view. Immediately after the
usual opening religious services were held
at thd time stated: Bishop Clark delivered
an able address, after which he announced
that he recognized the names of alx minis
ters (who bad been transferred) ascompris
ing the Bolsters Conference. There were
twenty-two ministers and five probationers,
formerly of the Church, South, who had
given evidence of their loyalty and willing
non to submit to the M. E. Chureh, were
admitten into the newly constituted body.
Each of. these ministers of the Church,
South, as their names were called, made a
statement of his agreement with the M , E.
Church in respect to slavery and loyalty to
the country. Want of space prevents us
from giving some of their confessions. The
usual conference proceedings and ordina
tion services took place, after which the
appointments were announced giving fields
of labor to fifty ministers.
—At the late meeting of the General
Assembly of the United Presbyterian
Church, liberal appropriations wore made
for sustaining home mission work at im.
'portant points, which Is commendable.
For the mission to San Francisco the Rev. l .
Joseph T. Cooper, D.D., a very able Min
ister of that denomination, now occupying
an important position in Philadelphia, was
selected. 'pie Assembly also agreed to send
aix experienced and able ministers to labor
for two months each, for the coming year,'
In the city-Of Washington, namely: Rev.
John G. Brown, D.D., of Pittsburgh, be
sent .Tulyand August; Tier. David R. Kerr,
D.D., of the United Presbyterian of thin
