The Episcopal Retarder of Philadelphia, in its notes upon the Diocesan Convention, just held in that city, is very outspoken and fearlessly comments upon Its proceedings. It commends the - admirable Address of Bishop Potter, being the twentieth anni versary of his Episcopate; excellent and well-expressed resolutions of Prof. Coppee in reference to the assassination of Presi dent Lincoln; report on Diocesan missions; and sermon of Dr. Washburn on the reis Sou of the Diocesan organization to mil alonary work. Speaking of this able dis course it alleges the doctor was more sun eessful in exhibiting a few admitted evils in the present system, than in suggesting remedies for them. It then expresses the slate thatit Is thepeireehialand not the Episcopsl system that needs a change, and that it is not so much in form as in life, not so much in the introduction of new agencies as in the employment of those which already exist, that improvement is to be sought. Whileit was eulogistic of the report upon the work ing of .parishes, because of many admirable suggestions, it condemns the wearisome length of the paper. The Convention Ser mon is represented as being "painfully figu rative and ornate." It represented the "Church assomething very handsome, very exclusive, and very well walled round and guarded. The representation of our relations to the other sects as being simillar to that of Jerusalem, surrounded by the Athyrlanaand of St. Paul to the Pagan- worshippers of Diana of the Epherdardu was a mournful ex. tdbitien." "The charge," It further says., 'that when churchmen admit the Christian Church character of other denominations, it is from a cowardly faithlessness and cgsfait their convictions, rather than fresh obedi• ence to their prineiple,a, to an unpardonable imputation which churchmen of this clam are but ionready to east upon their brethern Tice question of absorbinst interest was the division of the Biomes. Mr. Swope, Rector of Trinity Church of thli city, was the thief speaker on the part of those who desired a division of the Diocese; But the lay delegates from this place oppo sed the movement at this time. Finally, the Convention by a bare majority virtually consented to the foundation of anew Diocese in the western part of this State, having for' tie eastern limit the eastern line of eMlC.min, Cameron, Clearfield, Cambria and Somer set counties, it a given ELM was bnested for the support of the Episcopate. —The Patteral of the Catholic Bishop of, Pittsburgh, promulgating the Jubilee, sumes for the Pope that he Is the visible head of the Church of Christ; ho is Ills VI. car on earth; he is the successor of Peter, of him Whom our Lord chose to be the rock on which he would build His Church.
