Major General Sherman appeared before the

the fell report of his campaign, and watered into

Secretary Stanton to Ma so called agreement

his case on the asthjmt alladed to. General
Sherman exhibits great feeling, and seems n
eedled to steno aloof from Secretary Stanton
and General Hallock. Secretary Stanton bears
himself with the equanimity that results from a
contelonsnees of having done nothing more than
his duty at an hour when the viola country was
agonized at the tore seapielon that the great
campaigns and services of Sherman had ended la
what at that moment looked like a most Inj urious
compromise with the foe. Gen. Sherman scourge
, was net objected to alone by President Johnson
sod the Secretary of War, but by every loyal
newspaper, and every loyal man thoughont the
country, and much of this feeling took public

assurance that the Government at Washington

from General Sheiman'a defence that he meant
all for the beat, that he faithfully obeyed the or
ders of the President. He started the pane:tit
of Jeff. Davis. Indeed, his friends claim that
but for his arrangements Davis would not have
been taken. General Sherman will have the fall
benefit of his entire statemeltrand while It Is to
be regretted that ho refuses to see the necessi
