Jeff Davis' lionise Is now the sheds of General
Weitzel. It stands at the foot of Twelfth- and -
Clry 'sheets. It is in good condition, but rather
sbebby—the shutters broken, the garden gates
swinging all sorts of ways, and the stables
plaited directly beside the front door-way. Al
though it would be considered a decent gentle
man's house anywhere, it Is net to be compared
with many houses In Richmond.
General Lee's residence stands a block or two
abase Jeff Darla', and is &Modest, three-story,
Roston-looking kind of an establishment. The

N , Yong, April 6.—The, Jitauhrs corset-
pendent from the late mansion of Jeff. Davis,
says'the evacuation of that city was seriously
contemplated several days before It took place,
but the Real decision was not arrived at until
Sunday afternoon last,. when Leo telegraphed
to Darla that Grp:abed rendered the holding of
that city by him travosaltile. this triegram was
received in the churches, and the departure of
the leading rebels commenced at tact, and was
continued throughout the night. Jet. Davis
left at Bp. m. for Danville, and It is understood
the government archives are sent to nut-place
- The city was fired by General Ewell, and al
theugh General Weitzel, on reach* the city,
eedeavored to subdue the Banes, one-third-of
the sty was deetmyed. Among the buildings
burned were the War Department, Pod OMee
Treasury Department, several chttrthes, Me",
banks, and three. newspaper offices.
It was understood to bare been Lee's deed= to
endeavor to reach DauSillet, Va.; and there heti

dan's movement has frustrated, and Leo is now
a to reach Lynchburg.

IFuneral of lieu. E. P. Swart, D. 1.1.
The funeral services of this venerable and dis
tinguished dirbto Wore held In the First Presby
teriait ChnrCh. - Bearer Street. Allegheny, Yelter
day, commencing. at nine o'clock. At an early
. hour every available scat was tilled, and long
before the services were concluded, toe aisles and
vestibule were densely packed with those tumble
to find . seats. We
. observed in the audience
present, meet., of the clergy of these cities, of
the several denominations.
The venerable Dr.' Elliott, of the Western .
Theological Seminary, Introduced the services

or Dr. Elliott's address, the choirsang an appro
priate hymn, after which Dr. Samuel J. Wilson,
Arofeasor In the Western Theehmmal Seminary,
?cheered the funeral oration. The latter was a
utast eloquent tribute to the memory of the
deceased. Prof. Wilson his been an Intimate
bleed and admirer of the deceased for years. j
His remarks evinced a profaned sympathy with 1
the subject treated of, and he carried his audi
ence along with him In hi, eloquent flights..
At the close of Prot. Wilson's oration, Rev.
W. D. Howard, D. D., led In prayer, and the

Our Victory at Richmond.,
The crowning achievement of Grat's cam
paign which made Richmond ours and drove
from it an army which has defied us for font
years, HAUS to have , been as complete as glad
on, . So Irresistible was oar advance—so totally
unable was Lee to stem It, that his earthworks
were no bar to our progress, abet he bed barely
time to escape with even the remnants of his once
magnificent army. We entered it close on the
heels of his rear truard,And found almost all the.
loccmotives and rolling stock the Coofederacz
has left to make its few remaining railroads val-•
uable, with steam up, standing on the track,' or
snugly In the depots. Material of war was ev- '
erywhere In profusion, and even our prisoners
were left behind—hundreds of them being thoi
providentially delivered oat of the very jaws of
death—from the alaughter-pons on Belle Island
and in Libby. Everything denoted an abandon
ment
in great haste. Lee evidently thought be
could hold the city and it was oniy• after the
most desperate resistance and the endurance of
most Titanic blows that the necessity was forced
open him. and , the Confederacy humbled.—.llol

A Good Speech
After Secretary Blanton bad. addressed the wild
overjoyed crowd that called at the War De
partment yesterday to congratulate him, and had
read to them the dispatch announcing the cap
ture of Richmond, he presented to the vast as
semblage Willie Kettles, aged fourteen years, an
operator in the military telegraph office, as the
person who received the dispatch, and the first .
person to receive the great and glorious news.
There were cheers for Willie Kettles, and lend
calls for him to make a speech. Bat all Mille
could say was "I canal speak, I feel so." lie
could ndt have made a better speech if he - had
talked for an hour.
Fighting it Out "On this Line. '
-It Is nearly a yearsince General Grant declared
that he would "fight it out on this line if it took
all summer." Rammer, autumn and "winter
have parsed, and the line hu still been held,
gradually pressing in upon the vital arteries of
Richmond, until Lee hat at last been compelled
to accept battle, or starve and capitulate. Ho
has accepted battle ; his army, tho finest one the
m
rebels have evereseued, has - been crushed
his almoet Impregnable works have been Carried
at the point of the bayonet, and to=day "Old
Glory". floats again over the very citadel of the
rebellion.—Phgodelphia Butkus.'
• Gan. GRAZT celebrated the first anniversary
of assuming' command of the army at Culpep
per by the taking of - Richmond.
