possession one hundred ant seventy-five dollars
—three ilftyloilar greenbacks, and twenty-fire

counterfeit. Ile was arrested and brought down
to this city, and after a hearing before Molted
States Cominissioner Sproul, wan committed
to Mil to answer. ' Chartiock Is an
Englishman, and alleges that- he has been four
months in this country. lie stated. that begot
-the money front a stranger, at . the Eagle Tiede!,
on W,cdoesday 'of last week, under the belief
that it was genuine. Ills statement Is to the
effect that he came down, to this city, and in
company with a man named W.KLialeic, put sip
at the Eagle Iletel, 'where be remained over
'night. While4t,lhe hotel, the stranger, also a
native of the 'told country,'. proposed to buy
some gold from him, amounting In
all to ninety-five dollars: He at first
offered to sell_ but two sovereigns, but the
stranger said hi mhst have the entire amount—

reason tot wanting the gold, tnat he was going
bark to EtropM Qbarnock then consented to
make the eke-haute. and received the amount

Efforts have been made to arrest the
stranger, but no tidings have been beard from
bun, further than that be paid his bill
for lodgings at the hotel, and left before McKis
sick and qmmeek. The names of the three are
ou the hotel register, the stranger having regis
tered his Dante as Weaver. Ile le described as a
stout, chunky man, with black, bushy whiskers
under his chin. Clarnock alleges that ho can

been able to see since his• confinement to jail.
The prisoner la evidently the victim of Weaver's
