the number, (officer Woe. C. Wray,) rapped for
admittance, A voice build° was heard Is that
you, William?" "Yes,. replied the officer. "Are

"Yes, are you not going to leave your deiChns.'

The Increage or the Pollee.
A writer over the signs' titre of "Lev" who
favors the Dispatch with his litenbratious in re
lation to the recent "wise and politic" Increase
of the Police force, makes a faint, though la
bored effort to prove that the action of the )favor
and Police Committee la without authority and
in "open violation of law," and quotes sec
tion first, chapter first 'of the city • code, to
omen the correctness of his view. As the meas
ure is one which meets with almost universal
add hearty approval, and which this writer him
self acknowledges may be necessary "to protect
life and property:" and as the Mayor of this city
la conceded by the same writer probably to have
bad "excellent Intentioas" in thus providing for
the emergency, the question Is 'narrowed down
to the single point as to whether the Mayor and
Police Committee had legal authority for their
action. Now, I Insist, Mr. Editor, that they
had, and that they did not violate the law in
this necessary increase of our Police force, as
the following extracts from the city code, which
"Lex." with all his sharpness, seems strangely
to have overlooked, will show:
enema I.—Sharron 4.—" Fie (the Mayor)
may, site the ecateurrenee of the said Committee,
117 CASES or mooraonacv, increase the number of
the wight_pollee ; but in such cases he shall re
port to Connell' on their first meeting, the ne
cessity for, and the expenditure made on account
of said increase."
Sammy s.—" The day and night police shall
be subject to the control of the Mayor, who shall
have power in met of emergency, to appoint spe
cial policemen," dec.
Now, Mr. Editor, bow can "Lex" say the
Mayor and the Police Committee have acted
without. authority, when In accordance with the
above provisions the matter had been previously
brought becpre the Select and Common Councils,
In order that pro protection should be afforded
to citizens durin hours in the evening when
rowdyism Is ram ant and before the night police
are put upon thei beats ; and In view of t .. L o n o _

mittee, alter mature deliberation, and knowini
the actual necessity for a permanent Increase of
the Police force, have prepared an cirdinance for
the purpose, and I have no doubt that the City
Councils, in their wisdom, will heartily approve
of it. Surely the first object in legiaLation should
be the protection of life and property, and I doubt
no k, even i' UV'. 1311 reflection, would consider
ten thousand dollars 3 poor recompense for the
absence of that protection so essential to the very
existence of civilization.
