CHARLESTON
The rebels, in evacuating Charleston, I

that that wicked city should be laid in ash
ce; and preferring to apply the torch them
selves, marched out of the city by the light
of the conflagratron they Intd kindled. We
have no word that Gen. Grower. was try

Charleston until she has been laid utterly

has twenty to forty thousand men. Sup
pme they combine their forces—Terry Ind
Sherman—we must set them down at not
less than about one hundred and twenty
thousand men. And they wilt move on
with the sun, and before the orb that lights
the world shall stand erect in the heavens,
it is more than probable that the Federal
flag will fly over Charleston, Wilmington,.
Columbia and Raleigh ! Yes, Raleigh too!
Grant will stay where la, and thus keep
General Lee's army in the vice that hats held
it for the last ten months, and Sherman and
Terry will move on. We see nothing to
stop them, or prevent their getting to Ral
eigh, where they can open communication
with Newbern by rail, distance about one
-hundred and eight miles, then demonstrate
or mid toward fireensborough or Danville
nt pleasure. Newbern would be the water
base, Raleigh the inland base, and with
Grant on the Jaunts, and Sherman at Ral
eigh, both in command of largo t armies, all
transportation cut off and supplies exhaust
ed, General Lee's army ,would be in a tight
place. And unless Sherman can be met and
.whipped, he will probably come t if not with
the April showers, certainly with the buds
and blossoms of May. He travels rapidly.
Sherman will press forward. No one can
rive us a good reason for believing he will
be hurried back, end empty braggadocio is
no longer current.
What then? Sherman will in all human
probability be here with the spring, and to
'stay. The Governor, now so placid and
calm, se full of fun= and coarse Jests, will
have to fly to some obscure village as a so
lege; while the Lagisinturc, the people's
chosen representatives, arc now assembled
here, no doubt, for the last time during the
continuance of the present war.. From his
obscure "headquarters" in some way-side
village inn, his Excellency may call them to
meet in Buncombe, on the top of Table
Rock, or at some point in that neutral terri
tory beyond the Ghowan; but we have not
the snadyw of a doubt, but the present body
has met in Raleigh for the last time, and if
the members desire to do any thing to save
the people of their State from ruin that is
to follow the events that we have for
shadowed, they must act now. Has the
Governor no farewell word for his "dear
people?" the Legislature no parting blessing
for suffering constituents? Are wo to look
on these august dignitaries to-day, knowing
that to-morrow they depart to be seen and
known no more, by us, forever. The people
will stay where they are, and if Sherman
comes here and throughout the State gen
erally,' they will do as they have done in
Savannah, make the best they can of a
condition of things they could nut help.
kThe Rebels In Canada—new they went to
the Chicago Convention
' , The St. Alban's raiders am still on trial
before the Superior Court of MontreaL
Saturday last witnesses were examined in
their behalf, without making out much even
in favor of their being authorized rebel "bel
ligerents." From the following, from the
oronto Globe, it would seem that at least
one emmissary found treason a hard road to
'ravel :
"J. G. K. Houghton, being sworn, said
on the 25th day of last month I went to
Washington to get a pass to Richmond. I
went to procure documentary evidence con
cerning the prisoners. I arrived at Wash
ington on Saturday morning and attempted
to procure an interview with the President,
but did not succeed until the 31st of Janua
ry. I then saw the President, and stated
the object of My visit, and asked for a pass
to go to Richmond to procure evidence for
the raiders. The President refused to give
'me the pass. I used every effort to per
suade him to give me this pass. He said,
"No, I will not; these men are rebels; they
go cutting and slashing around, and I
don't see that it is any . part of my business
to help them." I maul urged my request,
and finding that I was unable to succeed;
asked him to allow me to proceed te Grant's
army or his headquarters, and thence for
ward a messenger to Richmond. The
President refuse.d."
It seems also that these precious Southeni
Democrats attended the Chicago convention
as lobby members. They must have found
an, abundance of sympathy there.
"Joseph Butterworth, sworn--I have ol
lead), said that I saw Young and Spurr at
the convention in Chicago In August last.
There were a good Marty Confederate soldiers
there at that time. They were collected
therefore special purpose. They went oa
with the organization for which they had
assembled. One part Of the object for
they were there has been carried out dace.
I did not understand the precise . point to be
attacked .by Young's eipedltiort, but know
it was intended for some point on the North
ern frontier. The arm -and material of war
stored in Chicago were intended, as I. un
derstood, for the purpose of those raids, and
facia use of :any recruits they might get."
Chicago at that time was a most promis
ing field in which so get up a little raid on
any 1 1 settitment, and Lieutenant Young
might have got any number of " recruits"
for such an cute:prole on the spot.—Chicago
Journal.
