The great oil belt of Ohio, in particular, which_
has received but little attentiou- la compariane
with other localities, gives unfaLstakable Indi
cations of an Immense deposit
,of .01.111g111004
'
We have recently matte a thorough personal
examination of a large portion of the Ohro
re
stone lb company with an early explorer and
also an old pioneer who yearn - ago was wont to
travel over them with axe and ride on hunting
expeditions--long before the oil springs were
thought to be anything more than a cariosity—
and In comparing the indications and external
appearancoaa wallas prusent derelopments with
those of Venango county, Pa.","- - whlch we visited
last fall, we shall not be surprised at even richer
development, than those of that now -noted
country.
It Is an established fatt that the Ohio oil la of
more than doable the rattle of the Pennsylvania,
owing to Its eutxrior quality and parity, while
the large deposits of coal on the oil lands renders
MR literally "cheap as dirt."
We met during uur excursion two or three
repro, entatives of Boston capitalists, who with
that caution that belongs to oar merchants, had
gang out to see for themselves the character, po
sition and probable value of the property before
making" Investments. Besides the satisfactory
tests showing the presence of oil, and the qual
ity of that obtained from.the wells alreadysunk„
those who ' , islet:ale in this locality now will
probably boy of the original owner or first pur
chaser, while the Pennsylvania region farms
have changed hands so often that there Is hot
little chaore at this time of obtaning any that are
not worthless except at fabulous prices.

Dr. Albert G. Egbert has donated to Mrs. Rev.
R. W.' Rutter, of Philadelphia, three thottsand
shares of stock in the Jersey Ott Well, for the
foindlng of a borne for theorphan chlltßen of
ifoldiers and sailors. The Jersey Oil Well is lo
cated on the celebraied Egbert form, and the
present market value is $2 per ranking the
mined present value of Dr. Egbert's donation
$OOllO,- with a large prospective increase. It
yields, buldes, a dividend of ,2 per cent. per
mouth, equivalent to $2lOO per annum. The
gill is hence a truly munificent one.
An Institution far the maintenance and cduca- -
Con of orphan children of soldiers and sallora is
about being established in Mercer county, Pa.,
with an endowment of $220,000, of which Dr.
Prgbert alone has opted to contribute one-half.
A similar institution, on a large scale, lain pro
place of being founded In Philadelphia, of which
the donation of Dr. Egbert is the auspicious Oa-
Matting. It is in contemplation to purchase a
; farm In the vicinity -of Philadelphia, and asso
ciate with It suitable seboohr. • At least $lOO,OOO
