Fort Fisher, which has just been captured, is One of scores of carefully built rebel forts that have not been able to with- • stand the guns and the valor of the Union forces. The only forts that we have not captured when seriously attempting it, are those where the army and nary could not combine in the attack. The works around Richmond and Petersburg can only be ap proached by laud forces, and Fort Sumter only by the navy, and these have thus far resisted us successfully. Fort Fisher was the most extensive of the works built on the coast by the rebels. It stretched completely across Federal Point, a distance of about four hundred yards. It was constructed in the most sci entific-manner, and 'ins armed' with from 'fifty to seventy of the best and largest guns that the enemy could procure.
