Dr. Prestley ou Commou school Edna..
A large concourse of cltlrens, friends of
education, assembled at. the hall of the
Fifth Ward Public School, on Friday even
ing. The meeting was organized by calling
to the chair F. C. Necley, Esq., President of the
Central Board of Edueanlon, PrOf. Thrall, &m
-et rary. After prayer by Rev. Mr. Shire, the
Rev. hr. Prestley commenced his lecture on Rd
oration. Ile observed that every Individual
to the Republic is liking educated in soma
way or other. It is impossible that any
our can exist without biting educated in good
or in evil, and It is of preeminent Importance that
tae sl 110 love our country stionld secure the very
best cducatlr n to our citizens in an intellectual,
moral and pi ricul'poittt ill Stew, in oryler in sc
rnnxininni of culture, and with cut
culture. bat .1 Mess.
It dors not so much matter In a monarchy, If
all Its sultjecte ore educated or not, provltietl the
inlets are educated; but in a republir where
ail are rulers, present or in pinspect, it Is abs
Ir.tely Indispensable that they be odusated, and
educated too, In the most enlightened maqer.
Now, the only way In which this can i.e dSne,
is by coercion, by.law, and the cst ablishmeat and
the liberal support of public schools by State
tones.
Short sighted men grumble at taxes 61-
schools, as indeed for all taxes. They would ra
ther may money for gaols, reform asylums, po
llee ttliecs, Ate.„ than contribute to our public
tehuuis, where the evil Is nipped In the bet, and
the young citizen brought up M. Intelligence and
trlrtue.
Not only should there be coercion lu taxes,
but there shonld tee coercion In attcadantt,t. It
is so on the continent of Europe, and, since It is
of each primary, importance to the Stott that
the children be educated, It should be enforced
hen. The sellls h parent should be compelled. to
send his child to school. At present he takes
Wm from relaml at tender years, places him In a
workshop, and kir the paltry sum he reeelvt% per
week he will sacrifice his child's future pros•
peels and jeopartlir.e. the Interests of the State.
Make our schools what they should be. Itslie
them. Spend yriur time and money liberally for
them, rind private schools out Them Is
no limit to education that may be imparted in
our schools.
Tho child,of the poorest citizen In our laud
may, in the future, be called to MI the highest
Orme in the land, and why should we by a cocas
pandmouy deprive him of tire means at the pub
lic cylonsm, of securing. the moskliberal of ednea
lien. lint, says the rigid economist, "this will
cost money, "and he is frightened of the expense.
+•Yes; but though It coats much in the present,
It still pay well in the end. What li our money
to.the elevation of the children of our country
It is tnndid, narrow-minded economy.
We must make:our schools embraecall branches
of education bozo the lows-at to she highest,
or d Lies we must hare the best tcaelters,:sud by
to si a o her I Swan a teacher who lial — Talent,

slid women who nlll make teaching a mores
n, who will throw all their coet4es, all their
talent into the Work, who will brim: to the rinse
that ordunt Mes of it In which alone they can
nays with success.
What then must be done I Pay teachers that
rotor salary that shalt command the higineit
talent in the Irani. "The dearest thing on. earth
Is a cheap education." Many a poor lad is
salibecland Ills prospects blighted by bad teach
hie. flew Is our country to be ratted to that DO
COCA of boner amongthe not fns of the world,
if ice are not willing to tat ourselves to pa:s
etae the best schools and the heel t.ehers in the
wend. There roust be competition for the taco
of tcarker. It must be sought after by our choicest
telvnt. The km of the poor man should to
I• rUer to robbed. Mc should hare the beat
chers that can be pr.eui al, and as ettinena, It
is our duty to provide them. That they can be

In abundance even at these wietchel sti
pends ; but they can sersrechy be worth haring,
and these In turn ran bx superaediei by
others who will teach for a yet lower salary,
call the public schools go down, down, awl a
cry Is ralsTrl to do away with them altogether,
Then we shall have to state anew, ankall the

Since the introduction or medicine, the orferfn of

Deafness, Catarrh,
AND ALL THE YARIOOB DISEABEd OF
ThROAT AND AIR PASSAGES,
SYMPTOMS OF CATARRH
The first sensation is usually a feeling of dryness
and heat in the nose' and a frequent theituatlon to
sneezing. There to an inability to - breathe freely,
as the node becomes stopped up, sometimes =arse
side, Sometime. on the other. ,
Soon a clear watery, acrid discharge makes ita
appearance, excoriating the nostrils, and edges of
the ape, which become red send somewhat swollen.
After a few days the discharge becomes thick, yet.
lowish, extremely frequent -and continues to be a
marked feature of the diaerte and a source of much
danger and the greatest aluidyance. Alter - more
or lexatime,lt becomes purulent, highly offensive, .
and assumes an extremely fetid odor. It is usually
so profuse as to require, when confined to the note,:
the frequent application of the handkerchief, or If
it drops Into the throat, which is more particularly
the ease, while the body lain a horizontal position,
constant expectoration, and sometimes both. •
Sleep •le frequesitlyallsturbed 0 a.serwaticin of
choking, caused by the presence of the dirtharge is
the threat. Owing to the heat 111 lisp hand, the
watery portion of tho Secretion often evaporates,
and assuming a condition of solidity is deposited
upon the membrane of the nose and - upper part oi
the throat, in the shape of crests or hardened lumps.
The accumulation of these Incrustations produces
a feeling of discomfort, and narrows the nasal pass
age so as to embarrass respiration. Therefore fris
quent efforts have to' be made to remove them,
either by forcibly blowing the nose or by - Persistent
hawking—a practice so disagreeable to the one at
fected as It IS. to those around trim.. After the re
moval, that side of the incrustation which adhered,
to the rat/et/one membrane will sometimes be found
bloody, a fact which explains the force required for
is disiodgment. During sleep these inert/stations.
accumulate more rapidly and the feeling therefor
is most uncomfortable Lathe morning. Sometimes
the eft cis to clear the throat are futileunttl after
breakfast, or after something warm Is - swallowed/
Some patients state that, they are not succesafu
nett! they have swallowed some whisky or brandy.

ex - en attacking the bones when small particles of
substance will oertaionally be found mixed - with
the discharge. The accumulation of the discharge,
together with - the thickened condition of - the
mucuous membrane, renders respiration 'through
the nasal passages very difficult. and oftentimes he
possible, necessitating respiration principally
through the- mouth, a method very deleterious to
the general health, but more particularly to the
lungs' as will be shown hereafter. Thounpleasant
noise produced during sleep, known air-snoring,
originates from the same cause. The voice loses
lie musical quality, and assumes a harsh - sad nasal
character/the sense of smell becomes-much im
paired or entirely lost, and the same effect, though
less frec, nedt, is produced on the loose of taste.
Occasionall g y, while blowing the nose,
a crackling
or übblin sound will be heard La he ear, and
hearing will be fowad to be thick and anapp•W up,
but return suddenly with a snapping sound. This
phenomenon Is usually repeated until, at one time, •
hearing does not return, and remains permanently
injured. Solace In the head of every conceivable
description will make their appearance, and add to
the distress of•the sufferer, and hearing be lost so
gradually that a considerable degree of deafness
may exist before the person Is really Wart of the

memory and produces Irritability and moroseness
of disposition. The', stomach generally suffers
more or less, is weak and irritated, the appetite is
capricious, and is nearly always back In the mora
-1 ng: In severe cases the system• becomes feeble

to either phyaical or mental exertion. Not 'lnfre
