On Tueeday next the erects! election on the ,
proposed amOidmente to the Constitution of
:his State will take place. The public mind
does cot appear to be properly awakened to
:he importance of this election. One resson
is that the Copperhead leaders and newspa
per organs, anxious for the defeat of the
amendments, but afraid to oppose them open
ly, FIVIOrTe a profound, silence concerning
dem, and thus make it appear as if there
would be no opposition to them. In this way
it is es p:cted that these who ta•or the amend
musts will be Induced to believe It is mines
es:tory to exert themselves or to go to the
Tolle at all. A letter dated Herrisbarg, July
22d, le the Charobetsburg Rporitcry, says:
..The event of the week wit the meeting of
• . • . . .. .
the DOXlCelltlie State Committee in this
P ace, on Tneadey evening last. It westraer
ly atter.ded and political movements of the
glaytet moment were discussed. The quer.
Von of adopting the proposed amendment to
the Constitution, allowing our brave so'..diers
to vote, was considered, and a T 12111111010119
ter ttment was manifested against ih, but
Bow to defeat it was a problem most d.,fti.
cult of eolution. All agreed that it moat be
done if it can be done, lest our heroes in the
field should make the Union victories is the
States too decisive - , but they frankly admit
ted that they dare not openly avow their op
position to the soldiers Toting.
°Reports were made of the progress of sec
ret organisations in a number of comities
with the view of quietist tbsOWiny el strong
copperhead rota against the right of rwrrage to
soldiere; And some of the mere sanguine ex
preesed the hope that by making no open op
;mild= to the amendment, and thus dis
arming the friends of the soldiers, they
might defeat eoldier suffrage et the polls on
Tuesday, the 2d of August.
°Anxious to were all to deny oar soldiers
the right to vole, this conclave of Dimacretio
leaders frankly confess that they due not I
declare their position on the issue, beasose it !
would make theueandsof loyal Democrats de•
sort the party rather than deny ear heroin
defenders their civil rights.'
"IL was finally resolved that they would ho
elicit on the issue; that the Committee would
tuVish no address to the people on the sub
ject; that every quiet effort should be mode to
poll the Democratic ro't against it.. and if
they felled they would, as a party, disclaim
laving oppeeed it, and try to procure the votes
of soldiers for the ticket of the traders who
tahatteted themselves by secr?t, unmanly ef.,
torts, to defraud them of the right to vote."
It is egainst trickery like that intlicatel in
'hie extract that we would warn all Patriotic
citizens' sod all true friends of tic soldiers.
Such strategy is much more t) be feared than
'pin apposition would be. The mass of the
Leather mho party may be resarded as in fa
ear of the amendments; but if their leaders
take no action and fail to supply ballots for
tie`elee'ion, very few of them will vote.
But :et the Influential men of the Union par
ty be more active than ever, and exert
themselves to bring Out a full vote on the
timer detente. If this is done they will be
