The report of the Committee on German
Work was made theorder of the day for Thurs

nine o'clock.
The Committee OnAppeals report that In the
''case of Rev..T. Ni McAbee, referred to them,
- they find it to be a case In which the General

In the case of Rev. W. H. Sheets, of S. B.

The report of the Committee oe the plan of
the Trusteeship. of the General Coaference,
`eras read: They propose a plan constituting
a Board of-Trasteee consisting of olargy and
laity, whose ditty ieshall be to look after, and
take charge of all legacies, bequests, do., de

milled for and presented.
A resolution was offered that the Constitu

Wits col:deeded that an area of 100,000
miles properly belonged to that part of the,
work, west of the Rocky Mountains. It may
be ktiown that heathen temples are being
erected, heathen ;altars built, and heathen
victims offered, within the bounds of the or
ganized States of this ,llnion. A Missionary
Secretary is' called for in that raven, who
shall look after ithe great interests of the
Missionary enterprise on the Pacific coast.
Other churches hive such an otheer there, and
the M. E. Oliureh needed it.
- The Rte. Dr.'.Durbin contended that the
wants of the heathen on the ?kelt* Coast la
not a Secretary but Missionaries. A Mb
. denary Secretory, cannot do the work needed,
„. it cannot be made his work to appoint Ins.,

The Fourth Yolnme of this able work com
pletes the history of the Reign of Augustus ;
and befpre entering on that of Tiberius, we
have, in the three concluding chapters of this
volume, a deeply interesting survey of the eon
didon of the Roman Empire at this period,
pointing out the elements of unity which ex
' feted 'in it, notwithstanding tho variety of
languages, of religion., and of the cheers of
the populations—MO.ons, subjects, and allies.
This curve; embraces an account of the great
cities of the empire, both In Europe and Asia,
among which, of course, Rome Itself bolds the
most important place—as, indeed, the extend
ed description of it and its surrounding.,
oo
cupying many pages of Dir. itterivale'e fortieth
chapter, will witness. The next chapter which
closets the present volume, is still more inter
esting, as In tt the author deplete 'life in
Rome' in the days of Livy, Virgil, Horace,
Properties, Tiboilue, and Ovid—each of
whom as the author remark., "reflected in
his own way the sentiments of the Augustan
'ago."

Mr. Thayer, as we have on . some former oc
casion remarked, has an undoutted mission
to write for the young. Be has now made
several ventures as an author of juvenile
books,•and in all he has succeeded admirably
—at least, we think that both the boys who
have, read them and the booksellers who have
sold them, believe that he has. This vol
ume, the ,third in the Biblical Series upon
which he bit wier engaged, is,designed to be •
book for the times—our own times—ln its
teachings and applications—while It is no less
a graphic recital of serlptural narrative., and
an animated portraiture of oriental life as
presented in the Bible. The author finds fre
quent opportunities to illustrate and onfor.te
the ' , duty and value of patriotism," and to
expose the heinous crime of treason.

Tho prolifte, but always popular, pen of
"Oliver Optic" has, in this volume, given the

—one that has, besides the charm of a mili

of what we have teen and beard, and are still

It is "a narrative of personal adventure, de•
