the fierceness of the strtigglio now trans

the momentous consequences .bleb hang

received concur In representing the conthea
Which commenced on "Thursday last as the
moat stubbornly contested engagement of
the whole war. It must necessarily be so,
for then in a greater number of troops en
gaged on each side than in any previous
battle, the stake to be decided is the very
existence of the Southern Confederacy, and
upon' our side, &fleas; we have generalship
for once as well •as brave and enthusiastic
troops. Whatever the fate of the Southern
Confederacy may be, this struggle now
taking place in Virginia is the great battle
of the war. None more bloody can succeed
it. May It be the Waterloo of the Rebel
lion
We hare no doubt that it will be. The
dispatches we publish this morning are of
the most cheering character, and, we be
lieve, are entirely reliable. The fighting
oa Thursday resulted, as we stated yester
day morning, in a complete defeat of Les's
attempt to crush our army in detaiL On
Friday our whole army engaged the entire
army of Lse, and on Saturday the latter
retreated, our forces pursuing. The Rebels
have strong defensive works at Spottayl-

therefore, to make a stand at Spottsylvania,

It is not believed thst Lzz, in his demoral

Oaaste victorious and more numerous
army.
From Burixa and Sonam.aa wo hear that

We do not know that a party or a news

The moral is plain. It is not new. Men

just this: The Pennsylvania Legislature,
whichadjourned last Thursday, if we can
belbsve all the reports that we hear, was
not a body. of men which, as a body, reflect
ed either the intelligence, the honesty, or
the common decency of the State. The
Stattiiinkin tact, disgraced by Its shame
less subserviency to corporation influences,
by Its equally ehameleee susceptibility to
the "arguments" of those miserable go

by its general regard for its own Interests

the People'. Committee!
This is what we base been looking for.
It is plainly an a.tempt by a few'dissatis
fied men, aided by a few others whose po
litical aspirations have not been realized at
the hands of the present Administration, to
prevent the nomination at Baltimore of
Anil...Luau !viscous for a second term. We
ire not sore that these men do not now in
tend to go farther and prevent if possible
the re-election of Mr. LiNCOL9 if he is nom
inated. Bnt no matter what their ultimate
purpose may be, this initial movement is
treason to the Union party organisation,
and would result, if it bad any strength, in
dividing and distracting a party 'which
every patriotic consideration demands shall
tio united and harmonious. But the men
who are engaged in thiii mischievous busi
ness are without a party, and can do but
little harmtothe only true Union party of
the country, try they ever so much. Most
of the men whose names are attached to the
oall—indeed, a large majority of them—
are entirely without personal influence or
'political prestige, and, do their utmost, can
carry but few votes wikt them. The sign- I
ere from this State are not recognized as
iv,ders in the Union party, and, with the
exception of ex-Governor Jonssros, are in
tircly unknown. Vie feel sure nobody ever
heard of the others.
But let these dissatisfied and disappointed
politicians go ahead and "consult." Their
assembling at Cleveland will do good; i'
will give them an opportunity to expose the
weakness of their "party," which the Cop
perhead papers are Just now intent on
magnifying into a thing of formidable pro
portions; and it will show to these gentle..
men themselves that for them to attempt to
stay the verdict of the people in favor of
the retention of HONEST 01.1) ADO in the
Presidential Chair, would be as foolish as to
attempt to dam Niagara with a smoothing
iron.
Ws observe that the PittsPargh Post, the
organ of the Democratic party of Allegheny
county, appeared yesterday morning with
out one line of editorial reference to the
gigantic and momentous struggle now
transpiring In Virginia—a struggle which
involves the qutetion of the speedy destruc
tion ore ill longer continuance of the ac
tinned Rebel Confederacy. Wahout one Ism 1
We would not write another sentence of
comment on that naked fact if we had col
nmns at our disposal.
Secretary Chase ou the National
WABBISCITON, Mr) G —A le , ter was read
by Senator Sherman to d.y, doriog the
consideration of the National Currency
bill, in which be says: .to ordinary cir
cumstances there might be no insuperable
objection to Jeering the property organ , :
ed under the National Banking law sub•
jeer, as are almost all descriptions of prop
erty, to general tait.loti, S-atei national
and mucriothel; hut in the per root condttion
or the country, I respectfully submit that
this particular description of property
ettould be placed in the camp category with
imported goods before entry into geter.l
consumption, and be subjected to esotusive
ly nftLIOCISI taxation.
At the present moment the ditties on im
ports form the sole reliance of the Govern
ment for mean. to pay the interest on the
public debt. If to thefts mans the taxes
to be paid by the National lithke shall be
added, a most important addition will be
made to these measures. The mere fact
that these laths are made pay able to the
National Government and so available roe
the payment of the interest on the pablto
debt and for the reduction of its principal,
will strengthen public credit and facilitate
ihe negotiation of the necessary loans at
moderate rates of interest. I lease no doubt
that such a disposition of these taxes would
be worth more to the Government during
the present struggle in practical results
than three times the actual value of the
taxes themselves.
I do not at all suggest that this descrip.
lion of property should not be taxed se
heavily as any other deroriptioo. On the
contrary, I think it just that it should bear
its full proportion or the publics burdens.
lam only anxious that the taxation upon
it shall be toad. to contribute se largely LB
possible to the general weltart, and ills the
conviction deeply impressed on my mind
that it will contribute more when aggre
gated In one mace, and made to tell upon
the general public credit, than when divi
ded between the Nation and the States and
nomeroue munieipal corporations, test
prompts me to address these views to you.
