PETERSBURG BUCUATED BY TILE REBELS
New Your, May 9.—The news by the spa
alias ore very meagre. The Tribtme has the
following, dated at Washington: Twelve
trains of wounded are on their way from the
[rant. The hospitals here are ready for:their
reception.
A report from rebel sources says Lea is
wounded.
The Tribune says The situation may be
thus epitomised. On Thursday our army sns
tainid successfully • Aerie attack from th•
bulk of Lee's army. On Friday we attaeked
drove them come distance, and took all their
aerialists wounded prisoners, and won an in
decisive victory.
Wastnantow. May B.—An army correspon
dent from head.quarters et the Wilderness
tavern, which he left Friday evening, gives
the following Intelligence of the great battle
of Friday The day has closed upon a terribly
hard fought field, and the army of the
Potomac ha added another to its list of mor-
decode conflicts.
Lae's tactics so enegetically employed at
Chance liorville and 0 r
ettyabarg, of throwing
hie whole army first upon one wing, then ,
upon another, bee again Seen brought to beer.
upon the army of the Potomac, which has
repulsed the treanendona onslaught of the en-1
I imy, and stands to-night with solidity in the I
1 position.it assumed this morning.
- 'The first attempt was made upon Hancock,! I
upon the right, who was so weakened in num-
bent by the battle of yesterday, tat the iron I
second corTaa nobly stood its ground. Then ,
the enemy hurled his battalions upon f3e4go
' wick, and once or twice gained a temporary
advantage, but the old veterans of that corps
nobly, rallied and, repulsed the rebel. with
fearful' sfarightsii. About half-past foto' p.m:
Lee made a feint upon the whole line, then
suddenly fell upon Sedgewick, driving him
back temporarily, but the advantage was
Boon regained and the rebels were hurled back
with great 100. 1
Night now came on, and it is believed at
headquarters that at this hour Lee has with
drairn from our front, although the nature of
the ground has been of a terrible character,
moot of it being so thickly wooded as to ren
der movements all but impossible, and to
conceal entirely the operations of the enemy,
yet he has been signally repulsed in all his
! attacks, and nothing but the nature of the
!battle field has prevented it from being a
1 crushing defeat.
Tho loss on both sides has been very heavy,
but at this hoar of writing I cannot-give as
estimate.
Now Yoae; May 9.—The Tikies has the fol

the gunboat Commodore Jones; Pout. Chap
man was instantly killed, and about fay of
the crew killed or wounded.
A correspondent of the Ihrofd, writing from i
James river under date of May 7th, 6 A
says : It is most positively known now that
Petersburg has beau 'evacuated. A tremen-
I dorm are is raging in that rloinity, and the
only solution that eon be given is that the
rebels have set are to extensive mills and
factories ',mated there.
The morning papers comment at length
upon the situation, 'but owing to the meagre
itecounta of operations received thus far,
they are rations in their opinions.
The IW.lnute says it cannot undertake to say,
from any information yet received, that Grant
has won a decisive victory on the Rapidan,
but nevertheless believes that, regarded as
parts of the campaign, the; movements and
battles of .lastweek are indention' of a final
sauces.
The Herald rays all that is thus far known
of
cooragement, and it the operations es( our armies is full of en
teems safe to believe that
we are successfal everywhere.
General Baler's operations 'south of Rich
mond go on admirably. &ix news from Gra.
Sherman's department is also good.

judge, it thinks the news of the battle highty
ennouraging, rad the result may be taken as

The World asp : "We wall the results, not
without hope, but with much apprehension."
The /reread has the following special from
Washington, May Bth : On the following day,
Frldey's attack WU renewed by Longstreeton
the right, while the rebel troops under Bill
Wore healed In like manner against the left
wing of Grant's army, composed of liancook's
corps and Warren's corps, end the centre was ,

CITY AND SUBURBAN
Atlas lir. Walker
Our readers will no doubt recollect the ep.
peamnce bore, some months eine., of Mies
Dr. Mary T. Walker, a lady who had spent
much of her time in ministering to the wants
of our soldier. In the hospitals at Washington,
and who was then on her way west. The
only peculiarity about the lady was her style
of dress, which might be called "military
Bloomer." She was captured recently in the
vicinity of Tunnel Rill, and is now aprisoner
in Richmond, where she has caused some sen
satun. The Richmond Es-arannn- Bays other:

Patriotism of the Ladles
As an evidence of the intense feeling of
sympathy excited for oar suffering soldiers at
the anniversary meeting of the Christian
Commission, on Sunday evening, we may state
that when the money which had been collect
ed from the assemblage was being counted, it
was discovered that no less than three fine
I gold ringehad ham contributed. It was not
knowno.of course, who the fair contributors
were, lint:the rings bear ample testimony to
the patriotism and humanity of the owners.
These jewels attest not only the willingness
of, the hands which they adorned, but they
speak of noble and generous hearts, and re
fleet theta brighter gems of love and charity.
The Treasurer of the Christian Commission,
in view of the interest which attaches to these
rings, and for the purpose of re. doing as
large a rum as possible fur the fund, will dis
pose of them at auction among the members,
to the highest bidders. The competition
will no doubt be rpirited, and a sum mach
greater than the intrinsic value of the rings
wilt be obtained.
