New You, April 21, 1864.
The leaden of modern Democracy, Ben and
Fernando . Wood, and the followers of Vain

Harris, rit"ently celeb:ated the birthday of
Jefferson. The anniversary occurred on the
2tl of April, but the celebration, like that of
Shakspeare'e With. day, had been postponed
for two or three weeks. The headquarters of
the gang alto cores Abraham Lincoln for over

well crowded, and State rights and free tirade

The old party watchword "Retrenchment,"
Is again exclusively in me. High prices have
!, driven thousands of people to adopt It. Many
families who have heretofore ocoopied whale
houses are seeking apartments or parts of
houses. The suggestive sights of red flags

looking houses, are lamentably frequent, and
carry their own lessons. This is breading a
feverish coalmines, as to the fotureorbich bodes'
no good, if it continue. • People generally do
not attriboto this Inflated state of thing" whol

business that bears upon the prime necessities
of life—upon those things that we eat, drink
and wear—has brought about this absolately
alarming condition of things. Shoddy con
trouts and the results have generated an
olt desire for " making haste to be rich," and
speculator; hove too wisely, perhaps, turned
to flour, butter, wheat and potatoes. The I

enough that the people are retrenching, and
in the right <Erection.

SISATIL.—Night &nice —Mr; Latta called
up the bill relative to the Pittsburgh and
Conaallsville Railroad Cerepaiy, which irts
on motion carried—yeas 23, nays 27.
131 r. Graham asked that it go over till to- !
morrow. The courtesy was nob granted.
At the end of sectionstioond,! in Committee
of the Whole, Mr. Graham offered a proviso
declaring the provident in this . bill Umpire
tive, if the Connelluille Company does pot
put the work ander contract, and upend one
million tire hundred thorium.' !dollars within
0130 yeat ands half.
Mr. Latta hoped that the amendment would
net be adopted. The people of Weattnoreland
and Fayette had waited long end patiently
for the completion of the r oad
. bj its present
company. Ms people had walle 127 years,
and waited in vain. The'rowt was wanted,
and must be built.
Mr. Graham said his proposition was modest
and reasonable, and ought to be'adopted. He
did not ask that the bill shotild not pus, but
if it passed, it should hale this proviso at
tached. It was not right, no; it was cud! ,
neatly improper, in view of the airertising'
for lotting, and the propridtimafor the rapid
ooutruction toward completion made by the
Connellsville Company: to take away its
franchises from it, end that too, just at the
moment when they are able to fulfill ell jest
expectations of the public,. The motive of
the parties pressing thli bin :are evident.
Another and rival corporation seeks to absorb
those franchises, to prevent the construe:lon
of a rival rout*. lie sineerelf trtuted the
