Fremont and the Preitdeney. -
communication appeared intbe &mate •
Monday morning, headed " The Fremont
Movement," . which, owing to Its imperious,
Ilictatorial and defiant totte,"should not be el.
lowed to pus unnoticed.. The writer repro
ionic the meeting at Wilkins Half on Thurs
day evening, rib inst., 1111 a very "small" af
fair. I say It was a very respectable meet
tog, so far as numbers were concerned. It is
seldom that a larger meeting can be hid in
the incipient stages of a political campaign.
It was a much larger' meeting than' the one
that was , held -in Lafayette Hall some time
since to further the-interests of tee:admit
Lincoln, notwithstanding that, on the latter
maiden, the - most gigantic efforts were put
forth to secure a mars assembly --and
distingniehed Professor was brought here
from Washington City to 'dominate our po-
Waif horizon with the brilliant acintilfa
tints of hit Metropolitan rhetoriol That,
,however, was a small meeting, and It became
"small by degrees and beantitallyless," un
til, when the -Professor had' euceeeded in de
livering himself of - his "piece" limns was
sweetly a corporare gast•tin the , This
woe no argument agitirust the popularity of
President Lincoln, not in fisfror,of.the tem
sition that few would 'vote fee fidor In this
community
.in -the event Of hie re-nomtne•
Lion.. It rather argued that our appreciative
citizens couldn't see the Professor's euneri •
ority as' an orator.
The writer further characterizes the moot
ing as "a discontented faction," composed of
gentlemen who have been left "in the shade."
I infer from these expressions that the author
of the communication inidonday's issue, Dlo
genes-like, does not wish any one to "stand be
tween him and the sun." This seems to be the
standard of his patriotlem. Bat it requires
no very profound !ogle to cob, that If it to pa
triotic fora man to' later (Or hie continuance
in office, it le equally patriotic for the disap
pointed office seeker to endeevor to secure hie
elevation to official position. Adopting the
standard of the writer, I seer dist the one le
just as patriotic as the other.. If all men are
"unpatriotic" that are "In the shade," and
those only are true and loyal that are "in - the
aunshine " Fremont and Lincoln' will both be
loft out " In the Mild, and McClellan will be
triumphantly elected. I infer farther from
the communication In iv:minion, that If its au
thor had been left In the shade ho would have
been in communion with this "discontented
faction," and would' have labored with all
hie might to dluipate:the official clouds that
interposed between him and tha sun. In
plain .Mtiglish,he might have denounced a
Lincoln meeting as "unpatriotic" and savor
ing too-much of monarohlell heirship and I
succeesion. • ' '
Again, he says, "To confer the nomination
upon some other gentleman than Mr. Lincoln,
-will be construed, both in 'this country and
Harem as a condemnation of. his adminis •
trade's andpolley." If this Into be true, the
great niejoritY of ell the :Presideram of the
United Stable must knit had their &amnia
trinket and policy eonderitned, and if, Mr.
Linehin doet not' die too noon, his will be
condemned ye% for Vitippne the writer does
not expect that we vitiate. him a life tenure
. for the purpose of near* g oar approval
of - - his ~Execative fiats. , lit - all this i
do tot say anything against Mr.
Lincoln's re•ttominetion. I believe he is
holiest but he is. mosiois. .', He does not 0 ed
ucate" the people. The people educate him.
He has teen-far behind public opinion in all
his measures, whilst Gen. J. U. Fnunoutitas
shown himself to be. capahle of leading end
educating the people: . .
I would prefer Fremont to Lincoln, i al
though I enjoy a personal acquaintance of
the latter and have perfect confidence in his
fealty to- the nation, and never saw the form
er, that i know of. ;Valli adopt the sublime
watchword of the politicalhavant in the Ge
nres, ‘.., 111 Fremont honest? Is he capable 4"
He is. Then 'elect hint: ' lint he Is mere than
honratind capable; he Is learned, energetic
and - determined. Those f• are "qualities we
need very much at the present time, and the
nation should require of President Lincoln a
gurrantee that, in the overleaf his re-nomlna
tton he will bp more energetic and determined.
'would , contribute of my feeble influence to
entre the election of Fremont; Lincoln,
Chase or Bitter. I ihould, however, make a
proviso hen, I wonid" not by any menus
