In reading some of do blographie. of this
deeply interesting series, relating to' Iron
workers and Tool-mbkere," wo are impressed
with the tact, that the most valuable and
fruitful acquisitions of knowledge, in all the
arts, have been made by melt who had but
little help Or encouraggnent Iron, others—
not seldom by those whose progress on re
sisted and opposed by di tSraltiee and obsta
cles not necessarily ari.ing out of the •object
itself which they attempted to to vestigste,
but out of circumstences of an entirely ad
ventllious kind. Perhaps the vigor and
harshness of such dithiplino had an important
purpose, and secured a growth and an attain
ment, • victory and a conquest, not other
wise—that la, not by any milder procese—
porsible- Many years ago we read a work
entitled "The Pureuit of Knowledge under
DiMeultice," of the excellent influence and
purpose of which, in an educational point
of view, wt./Matti not speak too highly—and
we know °Nye-More fitting and appropriate
tribute to pay to the interesting end valuable
series of biographies by Dr. Smiles, than to
say that It is a worthy sequel to those vol
times. We most add, however, that it bus
more than a mere biographical intereet--valu
able is that alone would be, by way of ex -
ample and encouragement to the youttg, who
may be straggling, and perhaps losing heart
in the struggle, with adversity—cot having
as yet attained unto the philosophy of life
which the poet leaches, thus:
'Sweet are the urea of Adversity'
Which lite the toad, ugly and venomous
Wears yet a pew's.. jewel to its head."
Dr. Smiles has Judiciously blended with
this Interest another of great importance both
to the student and the general reader, namely,
that which arises out ot a connected history of
the progress of the Industrial Arts their,
solve., in England and Scotland, which he hes
managed to accomplish moat satisfactorily by
the excellent arrangement and grouping of
the biographical sketches of hie heroes of in

Those acquainted with the half dolma vol

has written much to make him acceptably

sermons, that they 41.1 . 0 eharacterized by the
same graces of style, end the same agreeable
and often felicitous vein of thought and re

AN for the Freedmen
EOTTOII3 GA SZTTlL—Permit me,tbrougb your
paper, to call the attention of the communi
ty to what the American klimionuy Aesocia
den ill doing far the freedmen. The want of
some reliable channel, through which to re-
Hero and educate the freedmen, has been ex
tensively felt. A knowledge of the character of
the Association, and what It is doing for the
freedmen, will, we feel confident, induce those
who harem, particular way to aid the freed
men, to make the Association their
.abanneL
The Association was organised seventeen
years ago, when the Amsted captives were
retained to Africa. The Medal. Mmeion was
fomoaed in connection with the tosturne&Meri-
Maw, and has eines received the especial care
of the Association. The Association boa other
Missione. but It ha, given meek attention to
the freedmen in the West Indies, and has had
teachers among the fugitive, in Canada.
When contrabands came to Fortress Monroe
and Hilton Head, teachers were sent among
them, and this was continued to the freedmen,
and extended, till the great amount of all the
teaching Is done through the Association.
The /independent. of the 24th Met, after
stating that an additional secretary had been
chosen with especial reference to the freed
men, mate, that they are now doing as fol
lows "The Association has now upward of
one hundred and forty teachers and mission
arias In the field in East Virginia, North
Carolina, Tennessee, Mississippi, Louisiana
and elsewhere in the South. The noble
hearted Christian Foment of New England,
and of the North generally, are offering them
selves to the work with an earnestness and
in numbers which show how v.et I 1 force of
eonsecrated talent has been lying latent till
:roused by this call. In addition, there are
twenty-seven male and female missionaries
and teachers now under appointment, about
to go. In Louisiana Mr. llnbbs, educatlonel
agent, writes that there will soon be room fo
' a great number of teachers, and Gen. Banks
affords every facility for the work."
For doing this work, the people bare
tribled the monthly receipts of the,Alsoci
ation since the aloes of Its year in October
tut. Loot year tt expanded $10,600 upon the
freedmen. The teachers whe go receive about
$2OO, just what will feed and clothe them.
The Association ,l ansectarian—is purely a
missionary society, and could not be better
arranged as a channel through which to aid
the freedmen. The Western Freedmen's Aid
- Society at Chicago is auxiliary to the Amok
talon.
The American Misrionery, its organ, contains
lettere from the teachers end missionaries, and
and also receipts of all moneys or articles cent,
and will be sent gratuitously to those who
contribute to the freedmen through the Aseo•
elation.
Persons wishing the paper, or to transmit
funds or clothing, will direct to Wm. E.Whit ,
log, el John street, New York. Or, if
preferred, fends may he cent to Rev. D. R.
Barker, Meteor, Mercer °unity, who is their
agent in this State, and such remittoncee will
be duly forwarded and credited.
