PENNAYLVANI A.
We boar much nid of the ..treith of his.
Inn" but bet the time the "truth of his
wry," irltern inquired into, is resolved into
ollistorlevdoubte." We presume there are
' hat few of our readers who do not believe
that Pennsylvania was on called by William
4 0 6=4 and ladled, too, after himself. Not
only in both of . those supposition Incor
rect, but the origin of the name is really
involusd instime obeburity. Being moved
to inquire when and from whom, and under
'what aliMimettunes our State received its
name, we' el:Menne& Day's 'Historical ce.

pilation, and found only this simple mem
oranduri: "By the king's , order, much
against Pinn's inclination, Ate new pro
vino@ was to be called Pennsylvania, in
10:dar of t the services, of his illustrious
father." NO particulars were given, and
no. proof of the statement was cited. We
Opened Wok of more research, and found
it - Ole - CAL:ulna recorded, with the authority
given.' It wee lissard's Annals of Penn
sylvania; a work which contains, it is be
lieved, the only authentic and cireum•
stantial account of the naming of the pro-
Ville° on record. And now no how true is
- history :
Huard quotes from official records to
Chow that when the privy council of Charles
ifabloittod to him the draft, of the charter of
the province, ,!there being a blank left for
the name, their lordships agree to leave the
nomination of it to the king." The day
sitar tho altarter WWI granted to POW], he
-wrote a letter to a certain Robert Turner,
fo which he gives the particulars of the
naming of his province. The mantle parts
of that. letter we quote:

Although it may appear irreverent Mtte
SO say so, we . cannot resist the tempted°
to remark, that the great Quaker 110 , 50111 to
tome been a perfect master of the art of
"how not to do it." At first sight the
reader will probably conclude, as we did,
that to the King do ee owe the whole of the
.name of onr State, but a second look will
nominee him that we are indebted to Penn
for the Sy Ireuria portion of it. So much
Senn to be clear and unquestionable.
Now, from whom came the prefix, Penn?
Tbat is net so clear. Penn ; haying at first
stated with much positiveness that "the
King would give" to the province '•the
name of Pennsylvania," and having sob,
sequently stated that i.e proposed Sylvania,
we naturally hesitate to receive the ?e
-manate of his statement without a careful
analysis of Its meaning. Failing to obtain
ths adoption of the - name of Neu Weel
Penn, as we have Seen, proposed Sylvania,
and immediately afterwards remarks that
"they added Penn to it." To whom does
the term "they" refer! There are three
oonahlerntions which point to the secretary
and his assistants as the persons meant:—
first, if Penn had meant the King, it is to
be presumed that ho would hare said so;
secondly, the term is plural, not singular;
thirdly, Penn offered to bribe' the under
. Secretaries to omit the prefix, which
he would hardly have done i,f the King
Sad ordered it to 63 inserted. So far
lV ihe • stridence points from the King.
But Pena does not forget himself, and
straightway proceeds to give evidence on
the other side--"for I feared lest it should
be looked on as a vanity in me, and not ea
• respect in the King, as it truly was, to my
father." And this is the history of the
naming of our State. That the King's privy
nottncil, in submitting to his majesty the
draft of the charter of the province, left to
him the selection of a name 'therefor,
Rimarti expressly states and proves, before
giving the Tinter letter; but that the King
' exercised the privilege is not proved from
that letter, nor from anything else in Haz
ard's book.
W. odd a remark or two appropriate to
the general subject. Inappropriate and

by-which Penn first proposed to call our
