The Florid• Expedition
We have heretofore given very full extracu
from our Eastern exchange's concerning the
objects sought to be attained by the expedi
tion to Floridaunder,penerals °axons and
Smuts!, It will do - no harm to state again
that those objects were the cutting off of
eupplies which the rebels had been drawing
In large quantities from Florida, and the
restoration of the State itself to the Union.
If there Was any ulterior object, it was to
co-operate with Oscar and Samsun in
their grand offensive campaign &wallet the
forces of the enemy in the Gni( States.
Yesterday's' e,t : r brought us a mass of
Intelligence fro this Florida expedition,
which conveys th welcome information that
General Gilmore' had thus for met with the
most complete s, COM. His army did not
amount to more than six thousand men, In
fantry, cavalry and artillery, and yet with
this small force he had undertaken the
task of bisecting the Florida peninsula, and
cutting off the larger portion of its territo
ry from rebel rule. Hie plan was to ascend
the St. John's river to Jacksonville, a town
of some twelve hundred inhabitants before
the war, and than march his army west
wardly to Tallahassee, the capital of the
State, and distant from Jacksonville two
hundred and fifty miles. The latter plate
was asoordingly occupied on the 7th inst.,
and on the Bth one hundred prisoners, a
battery of eight pieces, and other value-
bhp property fell into our hands. See:

On the 11th, thirty additional prisoners
were captured, and a number of the enemy
were killed and wounded. In the engage
ment seventeen more of our men were
wounded. Proceeding to Sanderson, a
station on the Jacksonville and Tailehas
. see railroad, forty miles west of the former
place, our forces found an immense depot of
rebel ewes itt flames, fired by the enemy
before retreating. A large building, full
of salt, fell Into eur hands. Further re.
connoisanoes showed that the country
around Jacksonville for many miles to
every direction was almost depopulated,
that corn wan the only article of food the
rarer inhabitants had to subsist upon,
that what few people were left in that sec
tion of the State were anxious to return to
their allegiance, and that blockade-running
hod been extensively carried on through
the SL John's river and the inlets near its
mouth. At Baldwin, ready for export,
were found 260 bales cotton, Si") barrels
turpentine, 2,000 bushels of corn in ear,
and cornmeal in barrels; 50 barrels of
syrup, beside a large amount of salt, and
80 head of cattle. Up to the, afternoon of
the 14th, thirteen cannon had been cap
tured. Of the prisoners captured, about
one-half had taken the oath of allegiance.
The President's Amnesty Proclamation le
being scattered in all directions. Jackson
ville is to be made the base of General
Othstotte's operations, but it is not ex
pected that they can be conducted without
serious opposition. It is reported that the
enemy will make a stand at Lake City,
some - fifty or sixty miles west of Jackson
ville, and, foiling there, at Tollahaese
itself. When last heard from our advance
was eighty-five miles in the interior.
The foregoing tams have been compiled
from many columns of details published in
the New York papers of Saturday. But we
have not yet given all the results of the ex
pedition. A most important rebel docu
ment was found at Sanderson, which gives
a doleful account of the 'rendition of the
rebel commissariat at the time it was writ
ten, November 2d, 18111. Since then, Judg
ing from the proceedings in the rebel Con.
geese on the 30th of January, recently pub
lished in this paper, the supply of food for
the rebel army has not been much increased.
This document was in the form of a confi
dential circular to the rebel population
throughout Florida, and the author of it,
who signs himself "Chief Commissary,"
presents a pitiable appeal to the people
to come to the help of their starving
axmles under Beauregard and Bragg.
He says, "the necessity of general and im
, mediate action is imperative to cave our
army, and with it our cause, from disaster,"
that, "if the enemy break through our pres
ent line, the wave of desolation may roll
even to the shores of the Gulf and the Al
lende;" and that, "not only the men from
Florida, bat the whole army, are sneering
from want of food." He then proceeds to
quote from official letters in his possession,
ail of which tell the same story of deatitn

was on half rations of beef. In South Caro
lina and Georgia the troops were bat little

Prom the facts set forth4n this circular,
the value of Florida to the Southern Con
federacy, and the wisdom which planned
the expedition under Gen. Gilmore, are
plainly shown. The more we learn of the
secret history of the rebellion, the more we
are convinced that for many months starva
tion and exhaustion have been preying
upon its vitals. It would seem that, if the
. objects of General Gilmore's expedition
should be fully accomplished, the rebellion
will receive a snore staggering blow than
the most sanguine among us bad looked for.
Take from the rebels the. supplies of food
necessary to support their armies, and of
necessity their cause Is lost irretrievably.

"A description of the route pursued by
this party and of the tribulations through
which they passed, will give some idea of
the rough time they all had of it. Colonel
Kendrick had, before leay.ng the prison,
mapped out hie eourse, and concluded that
the Felt route to take was the one toward.

Goa. Logan's meant expedition into Ala
hams disclosed some facts of considerable
imports:nee. "Almost the entire population
of that eseUen of Alabama through which it
passed, and for miles about It, is honestly, in
tensely loyal. Officers who were In But
Tennessee say that the loyalty of that put
of Alabama is as genuine as any they ob

paper with a pencil, borrowed arms, and ac

company of bushwhackers, called home
guards, and brought them into our camp."

lustration of the peculiar ideas Inculcated
by slavery. The bunting of white men by

but the difference is that the whims are not
used to it.

(now at St. Louis,) died in Williamsburg, N.
Y., on Monday of last week, and in the eve
