On the train were a number of re enlisted men of veteran regiments who had been home on furlough, and were returning to the army, and availed themselves of the Met down train to proceed to Alexandria. The draw of the bridge hod been opened to allow the passage of a vessel. The oflieer on duty at the bridge, Sergeant Whit ney, let Regiment, Invalid corps, seeing that the engineer did not notice it, took a flag and proceeded up the mad, waving it all the time.
