The Strike Among RalimadEnginoun.
Ms difficulties caused -by the engineers on
the Pittsburgh, Fort Wayne and Chicago
Eailwey ceasing to work, have not yet been
settled, and are of a rather:more serious na
ture on the Western than on the Eastern Db J
vision. We have found ita difficult matter to
get at the question directly in dispute, bit
from publications recently made it appears to
be simply the old contest of &Corporatism re. 7
slsting what la termed a "censpiracyz' on the
part of its employees. The engineer' have
formedan association known as the" Brothe
rhood of the Foot Board," and the sod
denness with which all work was
suspended as soon as their demands
were not seceded to, created mimes alarm.
The engineers at Chicago were charged Tub-
Italy with ; refusing to ran trains, and coon.
bitting to prevent others from doing so; that
the Pittsburgh, Fort Wayne and Chicago Rail
way was chosen "to try the machine' and see
bow it would work; thatif Bloom:did there,
incre
er ased demands would be made upon all
oth roads, and the Pittsburgh, Fort Wayne
and Chicago road would be attacked again
more seriously than at present.. In a word,
the allegation was that if the Association or
Brotherhood was permitted to succeed, the
road would pass out of the hands of the
owners into those of the engineers.
The engineers, through a oommiktee on
publication, have replied at length to them
charges. They admit the existence of an de
'sedation, but deny that there ie any cause
whatever for alarm es'-to the coarse which
they intend to pursue towards the company.
They claim the right to fix the rate of coin
palmation, and to quit work If their term! are
'.not complied with, but they emphatically de
ny any design or intention of the Association
to prevent others from filling their places.
As to the road being placed at the mercy of
the engineers, th e committee say : "We are
happy to say ist these doubts, to our knowl
edge, have not been entertained by any rail
road officers except those of the P., Ft. W.
C. 8.. B. The requests made upon all other
Companies connected with this city, have
been honorably and satisfactorily complied
with, without any apprehension of any future
difficulty, nor have they any reason to enter
tain any doubts of such, which goes clearly
to show that in accordance with their judg
ment we are satisfied with the compensation
for the services performed, and that we in
tend to ask for nothing more, which decidedly
is the case. And, furthermore, they hare the
character and reputation of those who leave
served them faithfully for years, that there
will be no extortion fired against them."
Street Walking In Pittsburgh.
Persons who hare occasion to be upon the
streets between dark and midnight, cannot
fall to observe a very large increase in the
number of street walkers. During the past
year the evil has increased until it has as
sumed a serious magnitude, and may properly
be designated • public DiliNlllCe. The num
ber of abandoned women must hare increased
greatly of late, or else they are becoming
more bold and reckless under the present ad
ministration of oar municipal laws. Every
night these creatures may be found prom
'seeding the streets, and they aro encountered
at almost every corner. They make no ef
fort to disguise themselves, but on the con
trary use every art in their power to make
themselves known. They generally prepare
themselves for their promenades by getting
about half drunk, and hence they easily break
over the rules of modesty and decency.
it Is not uncommon to hear these women 1
wrangling open the streets, and uttering the
foulest language, regardless of the presence of
old or young, male or female. They go with
a swaggering air. jostling against every per. I
son they meet, and frequently offering wanton
tunics ta reepeotable ladies and gentlemen
who may be inuring. This is true as regards
all the principal thoroughfares of the city, but
Fifth. and Sixth streets appear to be the
special promenade grounds. On the latter
street, between Smithfield and Wood, along
the stone wall, the evil bar become so total.
erable, that the citizens residing there com
plain bitterly of the annoyance. The time
has come when the nuisance must be abated—
and while it is true that these women cannot
be kept off the streets altogether, it Is never
theless true that they can be made to behave
thernselvee, or pay the penalty of their mis-
conduct.
The Mayor elect, lion. James Lowry, Jr.,
takes formal possession of the office on Mon
day neat, and we have reason to hope that one
of hi. first setearilltie to abate this glaring
evil. He has a right to iustruc: his officer. to
arrest any woman of known had character,
who le found promenading the etre° ta at night.
These women have enjoyed many favors tied
privileges during the past two years, -which
we hope will be denied to them in the future.
Some •f the "officers of the law" entertain
the most kindly feelings far this class, mid are
so gallant that they would rather net lay a
hand upon one of them "save in the way of
kindness." Bad as the truth may appear,
prostltation hes been winked at by thnso
whose duty it was to throw every obstacle in
its way, and thus prevent its.spread. Let as
hope that "the evil day" has passed.
Revenue from Liquor Licenses.
We learn from the report of Isaac Blanker,
Aediter General of State, that the amount
of money received from dealers In and mane
facturers of riles, wines and liquors in this
county, daring the year 1863, was $16,790.50.
Of this amount $11,540 was from taverna;
$1,234 was. from eating bemuse; $3,139 was
from wholesale dealers, and $857.50 was from
brewers and distillers. During the same pe
riod Armstrong eounty paid $1,4 8 5 , of which
sum $1,035 was from taverns, and the balance
from eating bonne*, wholesale dealers, brew
ers and dealers. Beaver county paid $9OO dur
ing the year, s4lo'of which was from taverns,
$..00 from eating houses, $l6O from wholesale
dealers, and $l4O from brewers and
Greene county paid $624; Indiana, $1.057
Mercer, $1,235; Vonange connty, $1,208.15;
Washington county, $6OOl Westmoreland
county, $2,545. The largest revenue derived
from any one county was, of coarse, that from
Philadelphia, which amounted to the enor
mous mom of $133,492.
Madame Bell , ' Entertainment.
We have already called the attention of our
readers to the musical and dramatic enter

at Concert Hall, on Friday evening. Bee
object Is to raise funds for the purpose of es
tablishing an Orphans' Asylum in the city of
New York, for the acoommodation of the chil
