distance between us was the came for about
an hoar, bit as we got our steam well up, we'
gained perceptibly on the strange craft.
The thus now geew highly exciting, and
as the rebel perceived that we gained on her,
she fired up with desperate energy, until the
temps streamed from her tall smoke stacks,

We were still in the channel and surrounded
by sheets, and the Rebel Jading that vie

resolve to escape ue, to run over the danger
ous shoals. • But the blood Of our commander

If the 'num) had then known en mishap, she
could easily have escaped no, as we were hard

was running to kigh and breaking all around,
that when our brave lads disappeared in the

the breakers would strike her with a report
like a cannon, and sent the emoted foam
fifty feet into the air and over the ship, threat

brave old ship—God Mess her—bad a heart of
oak, and stood the eoushined attack ef the
elements gallantly thre all that long and

on the flood tide. We are now Bee in harbor

We took SS prisoners on boat 4 and from
'what I can gather from the state of affairs in
the interior must be watched, although they
try to patla bold face en it, and say they will
never yield. But their own lips condemn
them, as they' say theyintend resorting to the
