dbi:not enutinue Us - retreat into Virginia,
ant took Up - speitition in East Tennessee, at
Begerstille—a point on the railroad about
forty-five miles ' ast of Kitoxville--where
he seemed to stand at bay. Why he stop
pekthere it is not easy to explain,—far he
could hardly hope to subsist on the country,
which our army must have pretty well ex
hausted, und the railroad by which his sup
plies must come has been destroyed, past
repairing; it is said, as far as the State line
—or about fifty miles eastward. Elomorebel
dispatches assert that ei has oven ventured
to return towards Knoxville, and ob
tained COMO OfIV gee over our forces
on the way. But the Cincinnati 10a
rate, of Saturday, remarks that "It Is
not probable ho would undertake to ad
tanceagainst Knoxville. There are serious
dbstructions in that direction, In the shape
of soldiers. Gen. Suartan's corps has not
been withdrawn from East Tennessee,
though the General himself has returned to
Chattanooga. Gen. (108003 Onerrenta is
with Gen. Puma, and theseare fully equal
to the task of taking care of Loacierritur.
Geh. SIIILMWDZ, who arrived hero yesterday
from Knoxville, which place he left on Sat
urday, places no confidence in the rumors
to which we refer." -
But there is an Indication of a "fire in
the rear" that may bring LONOWIEESS to
grief, If he has delayed his march into Vir
ginia. We find the following significant
paragraph credited to the Richmond Ex
aminer of Det.l4 :
A dispatch was on Saturday rem:deed at the
War Office from Gan. Ram Sons, at Dublin
Station, on the Virginia and Tennessee Rail
road, Mating that AveilU, with a heavy force
of cavalry and mounted infantry 11.10 ad
vancing from Kanawha upon Lewisburg, and
that it wu probably his intention to endeavor
to ant Longstreet's railroad communications.
Nothing was heard from this movement on
yesterday. There are those who believe it to
be AverUrs design to penetrate into Rook
bridge and Botetourt counties. Imboden,
when last heard from, was in Pocahontas.
-What form, ho eon oppose to Averill we are
not Informed.
If this enterprise should succeed, Loso
eraser would be forzed into the mountains
of North Carolina, out of whichhe would not
succeed In gathering up more than a com
pany in every regiment under his command
to go to Richmond or anywhere else in the
"Confederacy."
Gen. Burnside—HU Reception In Gin
,elnnati—A Speech—Uls Gsmpstgo to
Mart Tennessee.
The Cincinnati Commercial of Saturday
Major General Burnside and staff left
Knoxville on the 12th, and arrived in this
city, yesterday, about noon. They had a
severe journey through the mountains, but
made good, time. The General received a
salute upon landing at the Covington depot,
from a equod of Winery detailed from
Newport Barracks. Early in the evening
he was serenaded ot the Burnet House, and
made a tow remarks. lie said that ho did
not claim for himself the credit of the cam
paign in East Tennessee. That belonged to
the private soldiers, non-commissioned offi
cers and officers. He was never associated
with any army in which every man
seemed more determined to do his whole
duty, than was the Army of the Ohio,
through all the trying scenes they had
passed. During the siege of Knoxville not
a man flinched. Every ono did all he could,
and neither by look, or word, or deed, gave
expression to a possibility of failure. In
this unanimity of devotion to the cause was
their safety, and out of it came success.
When the history of this war was fairly
written, and its facts fully understood, it
would appear that in all the armies and
campaigns it had been ashe testified it was
with the Army of Ohio in East Tennessee,
the honor belonged chiefly to the rank and
and tile. There were as good men serving
as private soldiers as any of the officers;
and the eases were not few in which the
men werobetter than the officers.

had born wit-
The appearance of UC.II. Burnside is that
of robuet health. The illness from which .
he is reported to have suffered since the
siege of Knoxville was raised, was a slight
attack of rheumatism. The General's opin
ion is that the rumors of reverses in Bast
Tennessee, and of the resumption of a me
nacing- attitude Ly Longetreet, have very
little foundation In fact. Gen. Longetreet
and army retired from in front of Knox
ville sorely troubled in mind and body, and
bet largely se reported, in deserters and
stragglers, and siege guns abandoned. Tho
enemy Is In no position to undertake an of
fensive campaign, and the Federal force In
East Tennessee is much larger than Gen.
Burnside hattabere. The newspaper reports
of the siege of Knoxville have boon full and
accurate.
Gen. Burnside has not resigned his com
mission. He tendered his resignation, end
it was not accepted. He was relieved of
the command of his department and ordered
to report at Washington, which he is pro
ceeding to do promptly, leaving for that
city on the ten o clock train last nigtd.
It is understood, among those having
means of being well Informed, that the dif
ficulties that have resulted in the relief of
General Bamsidc frem command in the 'De
partment of the Ohb, teak their rise in
something resembling incompatibility of
temper, between General Burnside and
General Haiku. Those who have read the
late report of the General-in-thief are aware
that,iteanimus toward General Barneide is
not friendly.
The military management of General
Burnside, during his stay In the West, hoe
been marked by several distinguished suc
cesses, and no material reverse. John Mor
gan visited his department, on one of his
favorite raids, and with his whole force,
horse and rider, and artillery, was gobbled.
Kentucky has enjoyed a season of peace
and quiet. The 9th army corps was de
taohed to reinforce General Grant, before
Vicksburg, and after the surrender of Pem
berton, made the march with Sherman to
Jackson. Returning, it took part in the
movement into East Tennessee, which was
made with such promptness as to • surprise
both friends and foes. Few severer blows
have been given tho rebellion than that of
the sadden occupation of Eas Tennessee by
the Arm; of the Ohio. With such celerity
and skill were our troops handled, that but.
ono life was lost in possessing East Ten
nessee; awl a whole brigade of rebels, un
der General Fraser, with several batteries
of artillery, were captured at' Cumberland
Gap without the tiring of a gun. This cir
cumstance the rebels are not yet done be
wailing, as Jeff. Davis' late message gives
evidence. In the cavalry skirmishing in
East Tennessee, we are at least even with
the rebels, and Gen. Burnside's name will
always bo conspicuous in the honorable re
cord made by the Army of the Ohio in the
fight with Longstreet at Campbell's Station,
the bloody repulse of the beet divisicin of
troops in the rebel army, at Fort Saunders,
and the steady and glorious Monte of
General Longstreot's loss, during hie op..
erations commencing at London, up to the
time he hod reached Rogersville, was not,
lees than livothotaand Men and ninepieces
of artillery:. Our loss during the same
period does exceed, end hardly equals,
fifteen hundred. It wee flip: expectation bf

superior in number to that ,wideh General
Durnside commanded (the country would
be startled if the numertoal Superiority of
the rebel force were made known,) that they
would be able to "occupy and possess" East
Tennessee speedily, and take the. Army of

Gen. Fremont.
A correspondent of the N. V. Poo,
writing from Jeffereon City, Missouri, ander
date or the fith imt., says
"Political molten in this State arc assuming
&phase which must be in the highest degree
gratifying to the friends of Freedom through
out the North. Tho great underourrent of pop
dor feeling is setting in with strong tide in
foyer of Fremont And all parties, both Rad
ical and Democrat, seem now to readily re
cognise his past cervices In the CALM of Free
dom, and to entertain strong feedings of grati
tude for them. Tho Radicals see in him a It
exponent of their views and wisloss, eai i large
portion of the loyal people of Missouri who
formerly acted with the Democratic party now
recognise in him a true representative of tho
people, whose rights he will ever, under all
circumstances,
protect and held inviolate,
whenever and however assailed, and in whose
fidelity and integrity they bore an abiding
faith. With politiciens, it is somewhat
mixed.
"Erery effort is making to turn the Radius]
successes to partisan account ; but the people
understand that it is simply an effort to steal
the thunder of the originator of the Emanci
pation movement in this State, to whose et
forte the credit of those successes unquestion
ably belongs."
