over the great triumphs of truth and justice,
end to (devote what remains of time and
strength to the cause to which they consecra
ted their yoeth, end manhood thirty Jean
ago.
"For while we matwellthini God ind con . -
gratulate one another on the prospect of the
speedy emancipation of the slavetof the Uni
ted States, we must net for a Moment forget
that from this hour new and mighty-responsi
bilities devolve upon ns, to aid, direct and
educate these nillSons, left free, indeed, but
bewildered; ignorant, naked and foodless in
the wild chaos of civil war. We have to undo
the accumulated wrongs of two centuries ; to
-remake the manhood that slavery has well
nigh unmade; to see to it that the long-op-
Tressed colored man has a fair field for devel
opment' and improvement, and to tread under
our feet the last vestige of that hateful preju
dice which has been the etrougest external
support of southern slavery. We must lift our
selves at once to the true Christian attitude,
where all distinctions of black and white are
overlooked in the heartfelt recognition of the
brotherhood of man.
"I must not close this letter without con
fessing that I cannot be sufficiently thankful
to the Divine Providence, which, in a great
measure, through thy instrumentality turned
me so early away from what Roger Williams
calls "the world's great trinity, pleasure, profit
and honor," to take Bide with the poor and op
pressed. I am not insensible to literary repu
tation; I love, perhaps too well; the praise
and good will of my fellow-men ; but I sot a
' higher value on my name as appended to the
Anti-Slavery Drelaration of 1833 than on the
title page of any book. Looking over a life
marked by many errors and short-comings. I
„rejoice that I have been able to maintain the
pledge of that signature; and that, in the long
intervening years,
"My vote., the' not the loudest, ban been he
Whe erar Freedom raided her cry of pain."
LETrin IMOISSENATOIL 8V315111.
Mr. Sumner wrote as follows :
"Boston, December I, 1863.
"My Dear Sir: 1 shall not be able to take
part in the proceedings to which you kindly
invite me ; but wherever I may be I shall
unite in your thanksksgivings that God hes
already allowed so much of the good work to
be accomplished, and, by visible assurances,
enabled us to see clearly that slavery will soon
be at en end.
"It is sad to think that this infinite good is
reached only through the fiery process of war
—so contrary to all your desires and to all
mine. Bat we have Dothan chooses. The
alternative has not been ours. Te save the
republic--to save eivilisstion—to . lave our
homes from degredation—to save ourselves
from participation in unutterable crime and
bisenesss, it has been necessary to rally the
aritintry spinet a rebellion whose single object
is the exaltation of slavery. Never before
in history was there a war so necessary and
just as that which we are compelled to wage ;
and never before was there a war which prom
bled such transcendent results.
"It islonly When the rebellion is seen in
its true light, as slavery in arms seeking do
minion-and recognition, at home and abroad,
that wo can find the true measure of our duties.
Of course every concession to the rebeltioe—
all parley with it—is a voluntary assumption
of its guilt.
" You and your assocla es have stood firm
for many years. Bach pious fidelity mat
have its reward in no approving conscience ;
but it cannot be forgotten hereafter on earth
or in heaven.
"And may God continue to bless the good
cense, and to blots you, who have labored so
nobly.
" Believe me, my dear sir, with mash regard
" Very faithfully yours,
4 ' Cantata Sousse.

The Meth:matt Caeuaerciai print, the follow
ing extract of a private let.er from an officer
la Grant's army :
A groat many prisoners have been brought
In. The charge of the army on Mission Ridge
astonished Bragg. Breckinridge's head
!ratters were on the Ridge, in full view of
our troops. The lady who lives there told our
troops the following: "Before you all came
up here, I asked General Brags, 'What are
yen going to do with me, General ?' lie says
to me, 'Lord I Madam, the Yankees will never
dare to come uPhere.' And," she added with
•blubber, "it wag not fifteen minutes till you
were all around hero!" A big lot of gray
backs were brought In and haulted right In
front of where I stay. I went to the door and
heard the different squads hallooing for their
regiment: "Where's the 34th Alabama?" "Is
the 10th Georgia here?" "Is there any South
Carolina regiment in that crowd?" The last
question was politely answered by a big gray
bark: "o—d d—u your South Carolina regi
manta; if It hadn't been for yod we wouldn't
be here."
