Mr. Begley, who represents. the Fi ft h Ward
Local Board, being ebsent-from,the city, the
Directors of said ward presented - it unanimous
request that the salaries of the Teachers be
raised.
A similar request wan- presented front the
Directors .of the Third Ward, owing to the
absence of their representative, Mr. Duncan.
A general discussion here followed upon
the question of an increase of salaries. A ma
jority of the Board faiored an increase, but
not in the proportion indicated in the petition
of the teachers. The greatest difficulty which
presented itself rife, that the present rate
of school tax, (fear mills,) was not sufficient to
warrant an Increase the present eateries. It
was true, •that,: , during the past eight Years„
a surplus of some $17,0 0 0 had accumt4ted,

mination to not only kill every officer who

to put out of the way every one suspected of
sympathy with the Government. They openly
declare now their determination to secure
entire control of all the mines, and to stop the
coal, and thus deprive the navy of this indis
pensable article.
The same correspondent gives the following

making her escape without injury. The dead
Irishman wm carried away by his fellow-ruf
fians, and thus far none of the gang have been
identified.
