PITTSBURGH, SATURDAY MORNING, OCTOBER 24, 1863
E=N7l
He was gratified that his first appearance to
speak on secular topics in England had been
to Manchester, where the doctrine of htmean
rights had rarer berm tattled for, and where,
therefore, the people did-not bestow ledisdrina
mat e praise. Allusion had been made to some
words or deeds of his that might be supposed
to be offensive to Bastian:nen. In the mighty
straggle which taxed every energy in his lead,
he hod not stopped to measure whether every
word spuken in fidelity to duty would be liked
in one shape or another. His only purpose
was the one be had firma he watered palate
life—to maintain the cause of Hid *or mad

or defense. Ho could return to his country
men and tell them of the cordial kind/Mad of
Englishmen to America.. [llea; hear.) Ile
had never ceased to feel that a war between
two such great tratiosialities would be one of
the most unpardonable and atrocious offences
the world could ever hebold. [Applause.]
Never were mother and daughter set forth to
do no queenly a thing in the kingdom of Pod'.
glory as England and America. If It were
asked why then were the Americans in sensi
tive, ho would tell them. fici man could of
fend another so deeply as the onitait was
stored moat. Men pointed to France and
asked why the press of America was silent
against that country, while it spoke as It did
against England. It was because Americans
loved England. Ile remembered the almost
universal feeling against the Itritieh con
sequent upon the war of 1812 That
feeling had been gradually dying out,
and what with common commercial inter
ests, a common religion, and nrulUplied
interchanges of friendly visits, there had
come to be in America a feeling moot cordial
and all of admiration of England. When
they looked at the mastodons of which they
were proudest they beheld that the foundation
stones were taken from the quarry of English
history. With their feelings of love and pride
towards England, could it be supposed that
they beheld in their midst with feelusgs or in
difference the heir-apparent of the British
throne' There was no ign whom the
Americans so much respected as the beloved
Queen of England, and the spontaneous re
spect paid to bet son was given that she might
regard It et etimpinnent to hermit. Meer,

Ix another column we give a few extracts
from a recent speech of H. W. Becalms, deliv
ered In the Tree Trade Hall, Manchester, one
of the most magnifloent places of public es
sembly, not only in that city, but in Great.
, Britain. Tho Hall was densely crowded: to
hear Mr. liter:nun, though it can receive aq
audience of seven thousand pcnvons. Among
this vast mulrltudo there were a few rebel
sympathisent, of course, as Manchester is the
headquarters of that tribe in England—but
so few, that their presence was hardly indi
cated, and their effrontery could not ruffle
the current of enthnslaam fur a moment.
We have appended an editorial notice of this
remarkable meeting from one of the leading
Manchester newspapers, which we think will
show how much (or rather how little) credit
those who read the London Bates ought: to
give to !tamest oracular utterances, se a self
constituted representative and mouth-piecu of
English opinion: It will be remelt:Montt! that
our dispatehes, only • fow dap, ego, cuntalued
a notice which the Times had taken of Mr:
Bencures discourse in Glasgow, in reference '
to which it said : "We believe no English
audience can poeeibly listen to ruck tengruige
with any other feeling than that of dispirit."
The enthusiastic reception of Mr. Bahotsea!itt
Manchester, within- a day or two after,-td •
kind of answer to the roam whieh will hardly
admit of controversy. ' "

A formal address wea—itrueented, after which
Mr. Beecher addromo - thwtdeeting at length,
the audience risingaid cheering him for sotto
