A letter from an intelligent and usually
well-informed correapondent of the N. Y.
Commercial makes the following statement
of the prospects for support of the Admin
istration in Maryland:
The Administration is likely to secure •
majority of the Maryland Congressional
delegation as Its firm supporters. The con
vention held at Bladensburg yesterday to
nominate a candidate from the adjoining
district, selected Colonel Holland, an un
compromising war man from Baltimore
county, whose nomination is about equiva
lent to an election. It is true that several
"Ifs" and "buts" were attempted to be at
tached to the qualifications of the several
candidates, but they utterly failed. Union-
Ism is unqualified in these border States.
The moment it imposes conditions it
signi becomes quiescent secession. la
his speech accepting the nonination
thr Ilkonglesa, Oolonel Holland said
that whatever measures may be neces
sary, or which the Administration may
deem necessary—men, dollars, or means—
if he should be successful he would vote
theM, and that promptly. lie did not wish
his position to be misunderstood; he +rap
ported the Administration in all it had done
to put down the rebellion, and would rupport
it us all measures it might deem nteeesersy to
restore us to peace and happiness The
road to peace is through the bloody tracks
of war; and the only way'now Is to crush
rebellion by the arm of an offended gov
ernment. This struggle must be quelled
before peace and happiness can be restored.
