terian) of the West will meet at Blooming
ton, lad., September 8, 1868.

United suttee, there are two Scandinavian.
Lutheran Synodr, the one is called the Au-
sultana Synod, consisting of .110 most part
of SwedlA, and ,a few Norwegian congre

Synod, and has a Seminary in Decorah,
lowa. Formerly these Synods stood aloof

ners and customs, of the Christians and
specially alludes to the dissensions among
them.' Their priests, be says, all advocate
different creeds, and as to their bishops,
"one Coleneo actually writes books against
his own religion."
—From the report of the Superinten
dent of the German Methodist Episoopal
Church Mission, Rev. L. S. Jacoby, in Ger
many, we learn there has been an increase
during the past year of 798 members. The
report speaks of victories gained, especi
ally In the South of Germany and Switzer
band, by the proclamation of the Gospel.
—The cornerstmie of a new Monastery
was laid at WesTilolaoken, N. J., on the
9th inst., by the Roman Catholic order of
"Passienists." In this country the order
now number about fifty members. They
are attired in sable robes. The monastery
is situated onhigh ground, which overlooks
the Hudson. The material of the building
will be blue stone. Its length will be one
hundred and six feet, by thirty-six feet six
inches.

congregation of Green street Baptist Church,
Newburyport, Mau. There are already
one hundred hopeful converts.

do. Crime is very costly. Murder stalks

Death of Sheriff Woods.
We regret to anemia the decease of Harry
Woods, Esq., Sheriff of Allegheny county. A
telegraphic dispateh,reeelyed in this city from
Cresson iliwinge,eonveyed the sad intelligence
that he had expired at that place at 9 o'clock
this morning. Ha had been in feeble oondi-

Springs In hopes of being able to recuperate
his health. On Thursday intelligence was

sinking rapidly, and on Friday morning his
death was announced.

belonging to a Mr. Mil, of Helen township,

during a thunder storm, when a strokes

night, four of which. were females. Three
were for disorderiy conduct, one for vagrancy,
and the test for kennels. The cause of

Many of the rebel prisoners, conflud in
vsuloua places throughout the country, are
daily making application to be released, tak
ing the oath of allegiance. Many claim to
be Union men impressed into the rebel service,
and have long sought an opportunity to di:.
liver themselves up to the national authori
ties. The friends of the prisoners often seek
to secure their release, while prisoner them
selves don't seem to be very positively Union.
Such cans are always answered, that tempo
:my affection for the Union will not sumo►.
