oen who fell la the lab battle of Gettysburg,
Major Wm. Gunk Lowry, of the 62d
regiment, Penagivania Volunteers. He was
a native of Armstrong oeuety, Pa., his birth
place being on the Island le the Allegheny
river, near to Preeport, of which his father
was, at that time, the owner.
He entered the army as a volunteer from
Clarion county, in July, 1861, and was chosen
2d Montanan% in Capt. Monks' company,
which formed a part of the regiment com
manded by the late Col. Bleak, of Pittsbosgh.
A vinney warring, he became let Lieuten
ant, then Adjutant, afterwards Aid Gen.
Arlin, annually Major, which last. positloa
he held at the time of hi. death. This occur
red on the 2d day of ;Fay, 1863, in.thi midst
bf the fleroa eonflist of that memorable days
He was fa the .prime of life, Moths comple

priocilding his death. Some few moitim before
his, desth, he visited Pennsylvania, on a brief
furlough, during which, he was united is
marriage to Kiss Mettle Stewart, of Indiana
cranial, • most estimable and: intelligent
young lady, who has been involved in the
deepest citations by his sadden and palatal
bereavement.
Idej Lowry was engaged in ten or eleven
battles, beginnin g.wlth that of Hanover Court
Howse, (in which he commanded the oompany,
Capt. Mopki biting slot) end pining through
all the various battles on the Peninsula, and
the two battler ofTrederiokeburg, and in all
esaspingSmhart, until in that of tiettysburg,
in which he fell.
Thebravery of Ilaj. Lowry was of the most
andonbted charsoter. It was well tasted on
many battle fields, and was observed and spo
ken of by both editors and men, who 'were
near him. Many fasts are related of his
promptness and vigor. in the cadet of them° st
trying circumstances. Gen. Gridin, in one of
his reports; ostiek mention of him by name,
as behaving with great gallantry and prompt
attention to all his duties as an *Moir. 'With
his Isliow soldiers, he was deservedly popu
lar. He was constitutionally affectionate and
kind, aver ready to anemias seit-denial, that
he zoighteontributeto the comfort or advant
age of others._ Had his life bean spared.
there is good reason to believe that he would
have attained to higher honors, and been pro.
mated to a more elevated position in the mil
itary service of his octuntry. Bat. God's
ways are not our ways, and it becomes as to
be silent, under the most"AfFliottys dispensa
