The departure of a citizen known to so many
of your readers, and who had lived io long and"
so well among us, is worthy of more than a
pasting mottos. Ells whole life was spent in
this ootennuaity, and his name and his face
were familiar to the whole people for more
than half • Century. And with him are occ
asioned Cilium:fiat/Ms of a generation now
well-nigh passed away.
Born two months Were the adoption of the
Constitution of the United States, he lived to
ISO thapopolation of this country increased
from less than 4,000,000:to mon than 31,000'-
000 ; and he also lived to see the blood of his
own desolidaistsabed in defense or those lib
erties for whit& his father 'had fought for
Snell long and eventful *ears. - At his birth,
in 1787, what is now Pittsburgh was then an
inconsiderable village; but .- during his life
time it has beoome a large, 'wealthy and pow
erful city. And with its growth, and in all
its vicissitudes, whether prosperous or ad
verse, he was an active partiolpant. From
early manhood hie wino has been connected
with its menetary,' , commercial, bonevoleit
and religious enterprises.
As a badness manna was distinguished for
promptness and integrity. And after a long
sad busy life be hes gone down to the gnu
without a 'single blot or stain upon his char
acter. In his intercourse with others, haw's
noted for that genuine politenualwklok con
stituted se marked a feature in the gentlemen
of that noble " Old School," of which he was
one. In his friendships he was timers and
ardent; while his intelligenoe and veracity made him welcome to every household and
every circle.
To throw open the sanctuary of hie home is
not permitted us; this is too savored for the
public! gase... But la it he was one of the most
agreeable:sad delightful of men. Bare he
was all that the husband and father should
be. Bat all Uwe virtues were crowned with
humble and 'smut cluistian faith. He made
a profusion of faith in Christ at the time of
the organisation of the First Presbyterian
Churoh in Allegheny city, more than thirty
years ago, under the pessoldng of the late
Bev. Joseph Stockton, and the Bev. Mr.
Joyce.
But his religions oherwater was mostly
deepened and matured under the fannt min
istrations of the Rev. Job F. Rehey, now of
Norristown, Pa- who begrime pastor of that
church... Mr. lliJsey was succeeded by the
now mumble Bev. E. P. Swift, D. D., to
whom 'Mr. Irwin was warmly attached. To
nosy good work he gave his hand, his heart,
and his prayers—and as might be =posted,
when his end drew nigh, ,he had little to do
exespito draw his garments around him and
fig down to die, oahuly breathing out his spir
it to God who-gave it. T* his own children
and relativea his memory will be always pre
cious, and by the church and the oemmunity,
he will be long held in remembrance. In an
the relation of We he was an example worthy '
of imitation by all who would be respooted
and loved while they live, and be happy In
death. ""The memory of the just b blessed."

therefore becomes a matter of no difficulty to
discern, now and then, a Jew who sympathi •

an extract from Your paper of the 13th of
Jane. This extraot bins 'follows
"The difficulty In &allots Presbytery wu
finally adjusted, and Mr. Hill, after proper
acknowledgments, was declared in goodstand
log in the Church."
This statement, it is thought, is calculated
to Convey an °treason, idea, as it would seem
to Imply that the Rev. B. A. Hill mu requir
ed by the General Amicably of the United
Presbyterian Church to make a coofeosion of
sea; the term "aoknowledgments" being gee_
orally used in that sense injudioial cases. It
is due to
.Nr. Hill to say that he made no nob
acknowledgments. He was required by the
Assembly to withdraw what was called a de•
olinature of the authority of the Presbytery..
This ha did, but at the same time stated to the
Assembly that he did not regard the offering ,
of that declinature as a sinful hat on his part.
Ho was also required to acquiesce in a decis
ion
.of a preceding Assembly, according to
which he was to "dotterel his willingness to
submit to the authority of Presbytery, and
declare his resolution to abide by our pretest
ed principles on the subjects that have coca
stoned these troubles, and to study tho things
that make for peace.
This statement is made by ems who has had
every opportunity of knowing the feats in the
case. J. T. C.

by seven o'clock next morning, and tbat snob

Immediately after he informed Gen.

LINADQUAITIRE4 OP ARMY OP TUB POTOMAC,
Jane 30 .—The Baltimore and Ohio Railroad
was repaired last night. The bridge over
Pine run is restored, and the train which left
this morning for Frederick and Harper's Ferry
has gone through without interruption. The
telegraph was repaired half an hour after the
rebels disappeared, and in a few hours the
bridge track was laid and the. rails replaced.
The rebel cavalry which yesterday attacked
a company of the lit Delaware at Westmin
ster, and drove them towards this city, was
doubtless the advance giard of Fitzhugh
Lee's cavalry, leading the way morons the ,
country through Baltimore county to enable
them to join the main rebel army,.in the vi
cinity of York and Gettysburg.
Signal rackets twenty miles out announced
a movement, In the neighborhood of Westmin
ster, of &large cavalry force, undotibtedly Fitz
hugh Lee's cavalry, which mashed the Poto
mac on Sunday. It is hoped they were inter
cepted by Pleasanton's cavalry, which was
4 - sent in pursuit.
