A correspondent of the New Orleans Er;
writing from Opelmisas, says:
A gentleman intiiitately acquain' ted with
a majority of the planers of-this and the
neighboring parishes, informed me that the
estimate made by them of the number of
balee opened Ni t° the world In the osuntrr
already oocupitd by Ouriroops, would not
fail short of Oro hundred thousand bales,
and our mlrmbe Would soon threw matzoh
more on the market. It has been hid in
the woods and all other imaginable places,
by the planters, to 'keep: their friends, the
rebel soldiers, from , burning it, and I have
not heard of one who was not willing and
glad to have an opportu ni ty of selling it to
the Yankee'.
Nor is this the only insult of this most
glorionsampaign of General Banks. It is
now beyond doubt - thet . the majalty of the
planters, and residents generally of the in
terior, are loyal to the Sacrament of the
United States. Numbers; of them hays ex
pressed a willingness and desire to take the
oath of allegiance, and are only waiting the
opening et books by the Seneral to do so at
once.
Cry of Despair trOm Richmond.
The last letter of the Southern corns
popdent of the London Timm is written
from Richmond ; and if its tone is the tone
of the rebel leaders titer% their situation
must be even more desperate thou it has
been thought here, ulielp us at once, or
we perish I" is the only meaning of his
long appeal, of which we cite the conclud
ing sentences as a fair example of the
spirit of the whole :
'•lt may be that the civilized powers of
Europe, standing as they do upon -a higher
level than it is possible that 1 can occupy,
may see no hope of suocessful moral In
terterenoe. But if they -Could only wit
ness the misery whioh is, , from every sore
of this once favored continent, crying
aloud to Heaven, it Could scarcely be but
that they would risk, some chance of fail
ure rather than permit humanity to be,
outraged by a conUrinanoe of such rum of.
aneuuk as has visited no reunion since the
sword first leaped from its scabbard, and
the'hunian heart was Bret sown with the
bitter seed-of vindictiveness and hate."
Whose suffering it is , that thus cream
the horror and the pity of the Time: cor
respondent we may gather from a preced
ing sentenoe:
"Another thought is continually finding
expression [in the Bouth]—it hi that the
two SOOtililli do not fight on level ground.
The North is flooding her armies with re
emits who are, threotourtiss of them, for
eigners, many of them taken from the emi
grant ahipe at Castle Garden; the South
is sending into the field the very life-blood
of her body politic."
Thin means that the ebtveholders think
it unfair to be pitted against "common
mudsills" in the Union armies--and this
English flunkey agrees with them.
The Movement Against Charleston..

A letter in the Toledo (Ohio) Blade from
a soldier on Folly Wend, Pear Charleston,
says:
I see that the correspondent of the New
York now intimates that cur iron-clads
were repulsed, and mays that "Charleston
is impregnable." He maybe able to make
some persons believe Bach stories, but we,
who are in plaits view of Sumter and sur
roundings, know better. If Charlestanis
not in our possession within one month,
some person or persons thigh in authority
ought to sink so deep in oblivion that the
loudest notes of Gabriere horn would fail
to reach them.
