In a recent eonversatior-with Col. one! Teller, that veteran dealer and extensive packer, took occasion to. give us the benefit or cr his -lon_expe rienee. in a certain:._paiticurar that c interns every tobacco grower in Pennsylvania. The large and costly tobacco warehouses that have lbeen erected in this bity,. said they were worth ,sOmething any city might be proud of, but if the to baei..o growers wanted to see.. them contineed, as tobacco packing estab lishments, they must give up ntireo, ly the use of artifiCial fertiliOrs. Nothing so quickly-deteriorates the quality of tobacco as..their use. No matter how large oehandsome lug the leaf, the fertilizer was sure to deteriorate its value'.to the-manufac turer. Cigars made out of tobacco grow!. 1 v the use of artificial manures may look as Well as any others, but try to smoke them, even though it be years afterward, and the cheat could lie detected at once. It-has already bud ,its effect on buyers. ,-There are • t•obac,o growers in this country who use these, artificial fertilizers year af ter year. Many Of them are known to the trade, and he and other pack ers_never go near them. The Only leiiance _of the farmers should be ba'rnyard manure. - Better groW only half as much. tobacco, than •to - eke out your supply of manure with some mai.tet compound. The speediest wayMf running down the quality of our tobseeo and destroying the to- . .13ccck.indifstry is_ to introduce the ` generaluse of 'artificial fertilizers. The Wriv--Vra has, time •and again,, (fireeted attention to this same sub jeet. Here and there tauser is found who makes light of this question, but when men with the large experience of Colonel 'feller' speak out so plain ly, it might be well for tobacco far mers to take his advice. We are glad to say, that the use orthese fer. tilizers is not very, common in this county In a neighboring county, that shall _lie nameless, the -reverse is the ease. it is one more argument :in tuvor of planting fewer acres in tobacco, but of manuring those tea heavily with: home-made 4 ._ manor.. There is money, as well as reputa tion, in such a course. If New Eng land had followed this rule steadfast ly, it may be that Penn Sylvania had not become .so formidable a rival.— From Ike Lancaxter Neu; Era. Use of CoOl Ashes. EDITORS COUNTRY GENTLEMAN.- It IsAlle common opinion that coal ashes are of little or no value. This is an error. I have heretofore stated dime of the benefits derived from tin•ir use. They have likewise been employed for years by my neighbors, who hold them in high estimation. Their benefit is, of a twofold nature —they 'favor moisture, and improve the teittire of the soil. They serve admirably as a mulch, either on the surfaeg or mixed with the surface soil, the latter baing Ihe best. As the supply is not sufficient for 'gen eral farm purposes, they are used in gardens, around shrubs and trees, and particularly for potatoes, which largely 'require moisture. Mixed with the surface soil, - and '9ccasionally stirred, they have an excellent effect 11;1011 trees and . _ shrub'i, keeping up uninterrupted growth during, a dronth, if the application 'is liberal and well worked-in.. • where used in a garden, the earli el they _are applied the better. The ground having been previously work ed, spread evenly abont. an- inch thick, and mix 'thoroughly with a few itches of soil. Where the soil is quite heavy moie ashes sboukt ba used and .worked in proportionally deeper, answering both as mulch and as. to grow the plant; in the oth er Case, where the soil is .good, prin cipally as a mulch. In, both cases nature is an advantage, either liquid or reduced to a fine state, as coal ashes possess little fertilizing mate rial. The effect will not be visible befo e the season is somewhat ad vance I; A fter that . it will show, its best work.beinr , done in hot, dry weather. The effect will last several years, depending upon how much is used. Yearly applications may be made !Rh benefit; and the experi-" , enee here is that if liberal applica tions are wade annually, and thor oughly mixed with the soil, no ma- nure is required. This I know has . a doubtful look, but observation has for years constrained me to accept it, and I accordingly procure all the coal ashes I conveniently Can e with the sane gratifying result.. Fort Plain, N. Y. Cotswold Sheep. A Kentucky farmer gives the fol lowing advice about sheep : The common sheep of the country pay only a very small profit, while good high grade Cotswolds yield a good revenue . —a large , interest on the in vest:lin-int. Let me illustrate the AM fetenee, so that it will impress itself on the min& of those who are not high :grade or thoroughbred stock. „An averagt farm in this section shot*" kpep "beep Staaliy; to; ofif bake farmer la tot inbetab. ive, but belieiesi in going slow: e buys theconitithi stock of the "he_ $3 eich, and e grade''ram for - 16; With ordinary goOd luck he clips 400 potiOdei- of wool and 'bell* the 41'0 pounds-at 4 /5 centafamounting to $lOO ; raises 75 lambs„ worth $3 each, making ;225, to 'which add - the value of old ewes, $275. and we have a total of $6OO. Deduct the cost of keeping the sheep one Year. $250;t0 which add the cost of ewes, $41,0, and deduct 5 per cent.. for loss, $l5, making a total of $565, which leaves a profit of $35, not es timating the value of the manure. If the same farmer buys 100 grade ewi s. fa $650, estimating the keep of swie for one year at $280,: allowing five per cent. loss, $llO ; total taco ; per contra, the ewes are worth $6OO, wool ten pounds average, or 100 pounds, at $350; seventy-five latilitt at, $5 each, $275, or a total of - $1,225, showing a net profit of $265, and the manure besides. Where and HOw to Apply p'er- tillzers.. It is often difficult to decidefor barn-y ard or stable manures, or - for any a rtificial fertilizers—whether to put it in the hill or broadcast it ; and whether to apply it on the surface, sor bury it deeply. Here is a Lint or two. If not strong enough to injure the first tender roots; a little manure near at hand gives the plant a good send off, like nourishing too d to the young calf or other animal ; the after- / growth is much better if the young animal or plant li:bot dwarfed by im perfect and insufficient diet. There fore, drilling inocuous hand fertili zers in with the seed is useful, as is putting some well-rotted manure or leached ashes into hills of corn, po tatoes, indeed with all planted seeds. But there are good reasons for dis tributing most of the manuretor fer tilizers all through the soft, and as deeply -as the plant roots can pos sibly penetrate . The growth_ and vigor of all plants or crops , depend chiefly upon a good supply of strong roots that stretch out far, and thus gather food over the widest extent of soil. If a nourishing 'stalk of corn, grain, or grass, be carefully washed, so as to leave all its roots or rootlets attached, there will be found a MAl derful mass of hundreds and even thousands of roots to any plant, and they extend off a long distance, fre quently several feet - the - farther the better, to collect more food and moisture. Put some manure or fer tilizer in place two feet away' from a corn or potato , hill, or from-almost any plant, and a.large mass of roots will go out in that direction. - So if we mix manures or fertilizers well through' the whole soil, they attract these food-seeking roots to a greater distance; and they thus come in con tact with wire of the food already in the soil, and find more moisture in dry weather.. -A deeply stirred soil , . with' manure at the bottom, develsops water-pumping roots below the reaeh: of any'ordinary drouth, and the crops keep 'right on growing - -all the more rapidly on account of the helpful sun's rays that would scorch a plant not reichi ng a deep moisture.-- Amer.' ican Agriculturist of 7pril. PRUNING IN JUNK,—We have tiled pruning in almost all months of the year, and on the whole prefer June. This being the busiest month of the year, there is usually little time for pruning," and so the favorite time is early in spring, and many of our old orchards, in their rotting limbs and decayed trunks, bear testi mony to the mischief wrought by the ill-timed use of the saw and .-.axe. Small limbs, an inch in diainet9i or less, can be taken off at any time with comparative safety. But the thorough pruning called for in a long-neglected orchard is best done iu the early summer. The sap is absorbed by the tepid formation of wood and leaves- ' the wood laid bare in pruning large limbs soon becomes seared, the healing proeess around the edges of the wound begins im mediately, dad in a few years the wound will be completely covered with i new wood and bark. There is far too little pruning done in the farmorchard. A dead limb should not be suffered upon the fruit tree. Good pruning leares no stubs, but cuts close to the trunk or branch bearing the excised limb.—American Agriculturist for June. • Do POTATOES EXHAUST THE Sou ' ? —There is a general prejudice against potatoes as a bad cropfor exhausting fertility. 1 have not found it so, on any moderately heavy soil. - The ele -meat meat _exhausted by potatoes is potent', which is usually abundant enough except on light sands. I have seen the bad effects of 'successive crops of potatoes on sandy soil, peers ego. when it was not supposed that first quality potatoes could be grown con' any Other.
