In cities, men and women who work in shops have to provide food and lodging-as well as clothing, and the high prices of . provisions have necessitated a sharp advance in wages. But on the_ farm this_ not so. That grain and potatoes are „dear,. only, mesas to most farmers now dear - seed and 'a certain greater cost of making the crop, without any assurance of a _higher price for -the product. If to this higher v . vages:for help have to be added, the fact makes it almost certain that the farmer will receive little profit: lam reminded of the practice of a wealthy farmer in a neighboring town, who has periodiL - tally, every few years, retired, rent ed his farm l sold his personal pro perty, and again, after a year or two, — has resumed business, re=stocked his farm and resumed its management. lie has made eleven auctions during the thirty odd years he has been on his, present farm, and he has made money almost every time. He keeps himself on the farm while it is rent ed,and devotes the leisure he thus secures in improving its- productive ness against the time whet' he .ex peas to work it, again. As he is, among his friends, a - gauge of future prices, it 'may be worth while to note that this year his farm is rented. On most leased land the soil deteriorates and the farm loses in condition . ; but _ where the owner remains on it and • spends his leisure making needed im provements, this need not be -the case. Generally for one Or two years •a tam will rent for more than the interest. If died - the owner sells off his stock when prices• are high, and buys back when they are low, he makes money, besides the advantages of being in the farming business the only years when farming really pays. RENTAL VALVE. OF FARMS. . A very. Amportant question is what should 1r the rental value of good farms. While interest in this State . was seven per cent., rents of farms' were conskderAbly below the legal trite. Tl;f. Wadsworths; in this sec tion of the State have several hun dred farms whiel they have been in. . the habit or -. eating for a term of years, at prices not above three to five per cent. on the value of the land. .Of late years they have sold some of their tarns, and I think the rental value of the remainder has been increased. Tenants are sub jected to strict rules as to the crops they shall grow, and are mostly boiind not to sell hay, straw or other coarse fiwider, But I notice that the tenants on the Wadsworth farms are mostly good farmers and generally succeecd when they go to farms of their own, as most of them do after a few years. I have no doubt that most of the restrictions under which the Wadsworth tenants are placed, libwever onerous they may teem, are - .for the advantage .not only of the proprietors but for the benefit of themselves as tenants. After a few y'ears of this schooling they are pre pared . firm on land that they own better t an they otherwise would. I think I have_ noticed .also that :old count „'people, after they secured a little money to buy or rent a piee of lam), were on the average better far mers than the average of American boys who keep--lo farming on the lands left them- by their fathers. Perhaps, however, this is not' 1 fair test. Most old country p_eople , cothe with very little money, 'and- those who manage to : earn and save enough _ to buy a farm acquire in so doing the habits which insure them after sue cess.-11". J. F., Moiiroe County, N. Y. =ECM How Good Cows are kuiped --- Milking is an art, and the farm hard who knows how to milk prop erly is more valuable to the careful dairyman than any other help. Of course anybody can milk, and some - can milk a dozen cows before break fast. The careful manager, however is not so anxious for fast help as he ' is to employ those who are careful. The operation should never be him _ ried, hut.the milk should_. be...drawn steady,•and as it flows, naturally. Some cows have very tender - teats, • and the rapid -milkman- forgets this fact in his endeavor to make speed. . The cow that is naturally - impatient --and fretful does- not like to submit to rough handling, and her disposi tion is soon ruined by ' such treal.- ment. With the constant irritation shewill fail-in quantity. and be less -- productive, just as any human being • would fail to perform faithful service when laboring undermental affliction or trouble. As the udder becomes distended and filled with milk the desire on the part of the cow is to be relieved ofits contents, and she wil ling'y submits to it for the relief it occasions. The content practice of being milked at stated intervals im presses itself strongly upon her, and she will seldom offer resistance with out cause. When a cow, therefore, that has been •a patient deliverer of milk becomes fractious the fault can always be traced to the milkman. The careless dairyman is the one who complains of tlie - lailure of his cows to keep by flow, the bloody milk, garget and other evils are the result of his own bid management. - There is another point in the treatment of cows that demands attention, and that is allowing them to stand g long time waiting to be milked. With cows that gave large yields it is very painful, and when the udders have . been filled to their utmost, and,the milkman is not on hand to relieve them, they become exceedingly ner vous and restless. This will do more to cause a cow to go dry before her period than anything else, and . many a good cow has been sent to the shambles th rough di miontion of gaga 4ity simply because nature had - re volted at her sufferings and allowed her to dry up because her storehouse was not emptied of its contents at the proper time. She should always be milked to the last last. drop, if possible, and , the last portion of the milk is claimed to be the richest, the udder should be left with noth- lug in it.r 4. With regularity :in feed- Wing and Milking, aad kind treatment at all times, the cow will not 'only' become: gentle and remain 'so, but Rill makeron several weeks longer than otherwise. An experienced dairyman ilieds help that are skillful, and -he knows how to judge the .milkman's work by the behavior of his cows. When a stable of cows to give trouble in milking it is only necessary to observe the man ner in which they are milked . in or der to cure the evil. The. udder of a cow i 3 a very delicate structure, and_she quickly rebels at rough Usage Or improper periods of milking, —Longfelt , ,te. Turnips for Milcu ows. ' It is Commonly known that feed ing cows heavily- with turnips' im parts the.flavor oflthe turnip ta . the. milki - bUt if given in moderate loan tith s just after milking; so thst twelve hours shill elapse for the ef-_ fect to pass off, little difficulty is ex,- perienced. G. W. Hoffman, of El-,1 mira, stated to the harmers' Club at ti at place, that some years ago he tried the experiment of feeding rtit.a bagas t beets and carrots, each for a fixed period, no less than .a bustle - 1a day to each cow; and thin a peck of potatoes each, {lay for a, like period. lie found n.o difference in the 'milk produced 'from the beets, carrots or ruts sagas, or the peck of potatoes, .the potatoes producing as much milk RS four times the amount of the oth er roots. He ascribed the .absence of any bad taste in the milk; when . the cows were fed on turnips, to the grain given at the same time. If fed without grain, the odor of the tur nips will be imparted to the milk, but with a liberal "allowance of grain it will not. Ile did not mention the 'amount nf.grain, or how it prevented the turnip flavor and odor, but his high character as a skillful farmer and accurate experimenter is a suffi cient endorsement, of his statements., We deprive the substance of this ac count from the repcift: in the Hos bondman. Please inform your readersrthe moat approved time to cut 'potatpes before planting.. Is there an advan- . tage in cutting ten days or two weeks before planting, to give time for , the cut parts to become dry ? In rare instances, with a dry soil the dried Cut surfaces may prevent lossi if they are in pre pisely, the right state, but we would not recommend the practice in any case.
