ABOUT THE CHURCHES.' MORMONISM AND TER CEURCRES.— `Bishop Tattle, of Utah, and several prom pent clergymen and mission workers . _of the Protestant Episcopal, :Catholic, Pres byterian, Methodist and Congregational Churchels In Salt Lake City, have address ed to the ministers of the different church-. es of tlie United States an appeal which sets forth in a striking light many facts concerning the evils of Mormonism. The chief points to which attention is called are given herewith : " 1. Out of a total population of 143,00 in Utah, about 110,- OfX - are adherents of Mormonism. Of the . anti-Mormon minority, only a small per cent. render us active aid in our endeav ors to-establish Cgristian homes in the place of the foul system ,of polygamy which prevails is Utah. Hence, we great ly feel the need of your sympathy, pray ers and efforts. 2. Mormonism is no longer confined to Utah, but already holds the balance. of Tower in Idaho, and has gz.itcd a stroTigloothold in Wyoming, Ar iz;La, and Southern Colorado. 3. Al tirragh there has been a strict law against p•i"lygairly upiat the United States statute took for more than eighteen years, only two persons have been convicted under it,. and it is practically a dead letter because of it- defect s . 4. In this matter we be lieve ywa cn give us valuable help. The Anti-Polygamy law of Congress, in order to accomplish its: intended results, reeds ' to i.e atuf-r. , 1c1 in the following, respects : (1) Su that the living togiither of the par ties—or co-habitation, to use a legal term be the pioof of bigamy or polyga my,•ir.,tead of the ceremony of marriage, bccitite the later is performed in secret w:•hin the . _wans of the Endowment Ifousf : ., in the presence of faithful Mor in, ris only, and no oll?, of these . ..will bear testimeny of the Net. (2) So that polyg amp shall ba a continuous crime instead of being all..rwed, as now, to expire with in three years by a statute of limitation. (3 ) SO that the women shall be equally p.mishaf.ile with the men fur this offence. I) Si, that the ae;:cssorie. to the polygie mous marriage 1.114.11 be equally puuislia hie with the principals. 0) So that the j , :ry list may be'increased to 400. (6) So that adelteiy; seduction, lewd and lasciv ious Pohabitation and kindred offences - may lie fru n ishab!e, as in the States and oth er. Territories of the Union." In conclu r,:on the request is made that these. facts be brought by clergymen to-the attention of the" I :origressinen in their districts, in cider that the e‘ll- , cr.mplained of may be i remedied at the coming session of Con- i EMI otiniNG to a St. Louis newspaper the Judical (2.,nterence which is to.pans the case of the Hey.. Nati .ralDent liOni , :_ and . .-finuftitld, Many people, especially in the far Interior, have few or no eggs In wih ter. - This is a result of 'neglect more than anything else.' Tile' fowls, are not cared for as they should be ? or they would lay nearly as well in win ter-as in summer, - One of the first requisites for winter eggs is a comfortable and agreeable house for the fowls--a house which shall be their own exclusively. In too many %stances no provision is, made for the comfort of the bens.' They are obliged to share the quar ters of the pigs or the cattle, to sleep on the wood pile, to wade through snow and mud and barnyard slash, and to fare slimly as to rations. It is no wonder that hens treated in this way do not lay. If hens are expected to produce , eggs they must be en couraged and assisted by comfortable quarters... The, second requisite is good feed ing. Poultry-keepers in some parts of 'the country know how :to feed pretty well, bat in other sections they know very little; about it. If you want your hens to lay this winter, treat them something after this man ner: Give a warm breakfast, consisting of ground-corn and oats, and bran, "cooked, or at least, scalded with skiinmed ;milk. Get the corn and oats giound, about half and half, of, each, and_then add about the same bulk of glo(i. , sweet .wheat bran, malt] sprouts or buckwheat middlings ; iri the feed is boiled for an hour it will' be all the better. Of this they shouid have as much as they will eat up I clean every morning in,a trough with a slatted lid. As soon as they are done.eatini?„ they should have as much clean, fresh water as they want; and after this some broken oyster shells I .to pick at. 'lf a eabbage'is Suspend ed within. reach the-hens will know what to - do with it. ' At noon they sould have a sheaf of oats or 'wheat ti - .pick -.. pick at, sand a little buckwheat. T is latter they be thrown among ! i ti esstraw they have been picking at. i i-,,- • t, evening they should have a full r d of corn, and if the ' weather is very cold, the corn should be warmed by. putting it in hot water for a i few minutes, and as much fresh water as they want to drink. Such a bill Of fare, repeated every day, with such variations as • you can , make, will soon . make. the hens lay. - ;in lieu of cabbage, boiled turnips. or potatoes, may be given: If these are...Tu.:shed and mixed In the . mornity? feed it M will lie about right. any recommend fre.sh meats for laying - fowls. - ,It is gOod in small quaqties, but it is too expensive. Milk is the best substi tute for animal food, and is cheaper, and on farms always at hand: ' A third requisite for winter eggs is to keeplsmall flocks. From twenty tottiirty,iS as many as should ever be kept in one flock in close quarters.; more are attempted the percentage of eggs will be smaller. The very best results' are obtained with flocks of ten or twelve. hens and a cock:— Farm Jounidl. - • -. It is nearly time to consider the winter feeding of farm gtock; at least•! this is the month to make all the plans and get everything in order for the cold season that will soon be at hand. The question of winter feeding in all its bearings is lin important 'one. There...is a constant outgo of fodder, and the ,problern is to so govern the expenditure_ that -the best returns may be obtained. Not 'only must the animal's be "kept," Int they must he. kept . well, that the opening of the new year of pasturage may,: not. find them run dOwn, or as it is termed, "spring , poor." Aside from briniging the stock through in a healthy and vigorous ,condition, there is the ma nure to be considered. This should be a good 'dividend tlpon the winter's outlay, and therefom it should' have a place in the plans for winter feed ing. It cannot be too strongly urge-d, that the best manure is made under cover. The same system which gives i the hest protection anal care to the I animals will insure the most satisfac- I tory returns -in the . manure/ from I them'. feeding for manure. is more! and more to be a leading factor in the winter •keeping or ftrm animals. A plenty of the beSt feed; a free sup ply of. pure :water, and warm guar- ters, are three essentials in profitable winter farming. This does not mean ' that the animals shall be in the stalls and stables all the time, but it does preclude that taut-of-door,straw-stack feeding; when the animals must stand in unprotected-, shivering groups the whale night through. Sheds—and-! good one'siwill pay for themselves in the better manure that *ill be ! made in,, tliem—not mention the. economy. in food for -the animals_ thus protected. American Agricillt . urist for Nore Tar. GREAT nfailing Specie IZEI DER 031PLAI1T : Salt: is used as a, fertilizer, and usually with beneficial effect on crops. It is known, however. that a. too lib- erat , application of it will destroy vegetation. The refuie salt from the anondaaa 'salt works is used qiiite commonly in Western New York on wheat lands. It is applied sometimes on the growing crop in Sprina,- but, usually on the field andand-workedinto the soil pi evious -to seeding. A much I larger quantity. may-be used when I worked into the soil w ith safety.' Used in this way it is beneficial in destroying insects and'wOrins in the' soil, as well as to promote growth and early maturity of the crops. Tt Is not claimed that salt is a direct fertilizer, fOr sodiuM is not. found to be an element'of plant food to. any great , extent in the cereal crops, but a mechanical effect is somehow- pro duced which is beneficial to vegeta ,tion'to a limited extent. Last season one of my neighbOrs used Over four tons of salt on thirty acres of wheat land, worked into the soil- before seeding, for which he thinks the croP was much Improved ; the yield 'wait over thirty bushels per acre of 'supe rior quality of wheat. The straw of grain when treated with salt is usu ally, brighter and eleatferof rust or fungi. than elsejtvhere, which would seem to show a more :healthy condi tion of the plant.--F. P. Root, Jton rog Co., N. Y. THE last hard, winter taught a costly lesson in stock-growing, and especially in beef-making, In central portions of the country, where sufli gent provision for shelter is excep tional, the extra consumption of ex-. pensive feed, the loss. of flesh of store' stock from exposure, and the slow improvement of corn-feeding bul locks, are considerations that seri ously affected the pocket-gbh retard cdthe preparation of the future sun ply of teeves for Eastern and Euro pean tntirketi. • The Conditions .of Winter Layers. Note , ori Farm Stock. •-.----... -.111411,•-•----. , Salt for Wheat Field production keep the margin of profit narrow; the cost of feed is increas. ing;. the domain of free pasturage decreasing ; .and the breadth of this margin can only Pe held intact by economy in feeding; by imhking a' ton of hay or a bushel of corn pro- duce more, flesh than before. In such a winter, or in any winter; the keep of a bullock .may be economized by the aid of Colonel Curtis's -- hemlock - board. The loss of flesh by expos . are is not only a waste of the feed eaten, but also of the feed to be eaten, and besides that, there is a real loss in the value of the flesh subsequently put on Altogether, it is a loss that more ;than destroys the. margin of profit lin the case of thousands of feeders. 'There is indifference, cafe lessness,-that savors of. recklessness, in the treatment of our farm animals, which brings out in a stronger light than anything else the inherent legit imate profits of a business that can endure so much of loss. =I Sick Headache Nine times - out often the cause is - ; in the fact- that the stomach' ,is not able to digest, the food last intro(' aced into it, either fur its having been un suitable or, excessive in quantity: A 'diet of bread and ) butter, with ripe fruits or berries, with moderate exer cise to . keep up a gentle perspiration,, 'will often cure ,it in a short time.
