hardly enough , waS - known of the re
sults of the elections throughout the .
country to warrant the statement
that. the Republicans had been vie-,
torious ail along the line. But now
the smoke has - cleared away, and the-
Official count has put an end to con
flicting reports. At home we have
suffered no brA,Ch in our defences,
and Republicans still rule in the
State. The vote war light, but it was
from the outset a hard fought battle.
The pliv-k and the determination of
the yarty has seldom been more se
verely tried in Pennsylvania. We.
have
. won, hut as by the skin of our
teeth.
.There is a good- 20,000 Re
publican majority in this State, and
'we have won by a mere plurality of
less than eight thousand. •
The prophets who prophesied ear
ly in the 'Canvass can now overhaul
their estimates and get wisdom. It
will be welly with wisdom they also
get_nndersianding. They began by
asSigning to Mr. Womes.. less than .
ten tle , usand otes outside of, Phila
delphia. They can end by contem
plating their estimate.' multiplied by
three in the returns. How they may'
like it we do not know. For ourselves
we frankly confess that we do not
like it. Strong as the Republican
party is in Pennsylvania it is not
strong enough' to afford a defection.

a warning that men will do well to
heed. Remember, there was no suf
ficient cause for. Mr. Wors,.'s , bolt.
There was no fraild or chicane in the I
eonstitution of the convention, and
no underhand .work in the convention
that, nominated . Gen. Barn-. The
candidate was an exceptionally good
man and hellad a grand war record
to back him. On the face of- 'affairs
the Republicans seldom made a bet
ter start in any campaign. But des
pite all this, one man, acting without
consultation with. his former allies
except in a few instances, was able
to take upward of forty thotisand
Republican votes from the party
candidate. We direct attention to
this significant fact'and commend it ,
to the serious consideration of all.
- Let it be understood that we favor
the strongest organization in party
struggles. We believe in systematic
work; and that can only be had
through organization. But what we
call organization. must have the as
sent of the party, or it is a delusion ,
and a snare. Parties are entitled to
the use of men, but 'men, as individ
uals are not entitled to
agencies,
parties.
A party may direct itsagencies, but.
its agencies
. cannot long assume to
direct the party, without breeding:
distemper. Whether justly or Un
justly, whethe r : -in whole or only in ,
part, that: is 7E14 is creating factions
in the Republican party of Pennsyl
vania and elaewhere at this time
Nothing is to besain(s.l by abutting
our eyes to the notorious fact. We
had better face it and go .- to work
anew. The masses of the party are
intelligent, and can be truated to act
up to their highest, average notion of
right. It matters nothing to term !

the genius of Republicanism is hos

very 'likely to mislead, being clearly un
constitntional according. to a decision of
the Supreme Court in the case 6f 31cCAF
FERT1i vs. GEYER, to be found in volume
52 of -the Pennsylvania State reports. By
this decision an act disfranchising desert
ers in the late war was declared unconsti
tutional. In pronouncin, the opinion the
Court said that the qualifications of voters
were fixed by the Constitution and could
not be added to'n't abridged by the Legisla.
Lure. Tue right of franchise is a.sacred
right guaranteed by - the Constitution and
it cannot - be altered - by mere Legislative
enactment. Betting is an offense against
the law which may be ptinished, but it
will not deprive the person from voting.
THE President has accepted Attorney
General MACVEAGH'S resignation. The
employes of the depaitment called upon
him Monday and made their official fare
wells, and he then turned the depahment
over to the charge of Solicitor General
Philips, who will be Acting Attorney
GeneAl until a new appointment is made.
