F. When We went to -. press last week hardly enough , waS - known of the re sults of the elections throughout the . country to warrant the statement that. the Republicans had been vie-, torious ail along the line. But now the smoke has - cleared away, and the- Official count has put an end to con flicting reports. At home we have suffered no brA,Ch in our defences, and Republicans still rule in the State. The vote war light, but it was from the outset a hard fought battle. The pliv-k and the determination of the yarty has seldom been more se verely tried in Pennsylvania. We. have . won, hut as by the skin of our teeth. .There is a good- 20,000 Re publican majority in this State, and 'we have won by a mere plurality of less than eight thousand. • The prophets who prophesied ear ly in the 'Canvass can now overhaul their estimates and get wisdom. They can end by contem plating their estimate.' multiplied by three in the returns. How they may' like it we do not know. For ourselves we frankly confess that we do not like it. Strong as the Republican party is in Pennsylvania it is not strong enough' to afford a defection. of even fifty thousand votes, esrcial lvin'4,what is called an_ "off year." had there been places of great - ith portance at stake so as to have, brought out thevote an aggressive canVass like that made by NI r.:Wof.ri: would have drawn off - not less .than seventy-five thousand votes, and per-. Imps 'more. Men who nuderstai:d political struggles need not be inform ed that such a defection as that would imperil the ascendency of the party in Pennsylvania. We have 'nut so many votes to spare as that. Yet, unless-we take a new depart: ure we must make up our minds to spare many more . votes than were I east for Mr. Worst:. His canvass is a warning that men will do well to heed. Remember, there was no suf ficient cause for. Mr. Wors,.'s , bolt. There was no fraild or chicane in the I eonstitution of the convention, and no underhand .work in the convention that, nominated . Gen. Barn-. The candidate was an exceptionally good man and hellad a grand war record to back him. On the face of- 'affairs the Republicans seldom made a bet ter start in any campaign. But des pite all this, one man, acting without consultation with. his former allies except in a few instances, was able to take upward of forty thotisand Republican votes from the party candidate. We direct attention to this significant fact'and commend it , to the serious consideration of all. - Let it be understood that we favor the strongest organization in party struggles. We believe in systematic work; and that can only be had through organization. But what we call organization. must have the as sent of the party, or it is a delusion , and a snare. Parties are entitled to the use of men, but 'men, as individ uals are not entitled to agencies, parties. A party may direct itsagencies, but. its agencies . cannot long assume to direct the party, without breeding: distemper. The following proclamation, desig- nating Thursday, nvember 24th, 1.71, as a day of Thanksgiving and praise has been issued by the Presi dent: , • By the Prexident the United Staiesof It has long been the pious custom of our people . with the closing of the year to look back upon the blessings brought : to them in the changing course of the seasons, and to return solemn thanks to the all-giving Source from-whom they flow; and although at this period, when the filling leaf admonishes that the time of our sal c.red duty is at hand, our nation still lies 'in the shadow of a great bereave. went, and the mournino , which has filled our hearts still finds its sorrow ful-expression towat'd the God whom we but "lately bowed in grief and supplication ; yet the co.untleks bene fits whicili have been showered down upon us dui i rig the past twelvemonth call for our t fervent gratitude, and makeit fitting that we should.rejoice With thankfulness that the L?rd in his infinite mercy has most signally favOred our country and . our people. • Peace without and prosperity within have been vouchsafed to us: No pe,t :Hence has visited our shores; the abundant privileges of freedom which our fathers left us - in • their wisdoth are still our. increasing heritage; and if in parts of . our vast domain some affliction .has visited our brethren in • their forest homes, yet even this ' calamity has been tempered and in a manner sanctified' 1 the generous compassion for the sufferers . which has been called forth throughout our land For all these things it is meet that the voice of the .nation should go up to God is devout homage. THE Clinton Democrat in comment ing upon the question of betting at elect ions, says there is au ant of. the Legisla ture requiring Inspectors and Judges of electfons to reject such votes. This act is very 'likely to mislead, being clearly un constitntional according. to a decision of the Supreme Court in the case 6f 31cCAF FERT1i vs. GEYER, to be found in volume 52 of -the Pennsylvania State reports. By this decision an act disfranchising desert ers in the late war was declared unconsti tutional. In pronouncin, the opinion the Court said that the qualifications of voters were fixed by the Constitution and could not be added to'n't abridged by the Legisla. Lure. Tue right of franchise is a.sacred right guaranteed by - the Constitution and it cannot - be altered - by mere Legislative enactment. Betting is an offense against the law which may be ptinished, but it will not deprive the person from voting. THE President has accepted Attorney General MACVEAGH'S resignation.
