THE city editor of the Elmira Ativer.:

fashion in bonnets.. The editor possesses
_wonderful powers of description, but he
should visit-ToWanda--here all the wo
men' are hatalsome—on Sunday afternoon,
if he desires to see the full "dressiness
and beWitchiness'? of the poke i The ed
itor who _has
.never seen but the plain
faces of Elmira girls in a "Ipoke," re
markS thusly : •
"Of all the queer shapes which fashion
hasslevised for ladiesl head wear, the
poke bonnet of the present spring "series,"
stands without - a rival worthy of the name.
We presume . it is called poke because the
-front peak pokes into :the : air. IL turns
-up-atlitont, !down behind, and half and
half at the sides—its -shape was never.bc
,fore seen on !the earth'. or the waters un
der the earth. It is sold by all milliners
and is warranted •to l'become' any sort
of physiognomy, from; a Grecian profile
to the bewitching front •view of an Irish
lass. It is progre sive,• and costs any
where from sixty-five cents to seventeen
dollars.., There is ample space under the•
front verandah for any quantity of bang;
friz, or curled hair, while the room tin
der the rear• portico is- too limited. for
great expanse •of. waterfall. The poke
bonnet gives the wearer an air of gallus:
ness, so to speak, and •at the same . time
is dressy and bewitching. .It were better
had .the inventor not decreed that the
sides should incline downwards but her

the racto'r that sends theawnitiglover the
