During Abti - wliole Continuance of the, trial
the Court House'was literally packed
with people of all classes; nd of all ages,
from the boy of tender years to the man
whose locks were whitened bythe "frosts

and anxious to catch each word of the
filthy and obscene star) , as it was recited
.on the witness stand.. It is a sad . Oom-*
mentary, but nevertheless a truthful one,
that the moat eloquent ordtor in the
whole country could not have held the'at
ill

the young woman w en giving her evi
dence. While the ,ve diet of the jury was
a surprise to all, the z iranting of o new

seems to meet with a general appro val by
the public. There 'is a general regret ex.

and a very earnest expression that, boys;

Vt.: have received a communication
from Striithfield, reflecting in severe terms
i .
upon certain citizens 'or that an;' ah ad
.
joining town , for.vihat it is asserted they,
did with reference to the lattO. "Smith
field. Riot Case." The communication
has.been consigned tet the ivaste„,basket.
If any one in Smithfield; or the adjoining
neighborhood has transgressed, the pro
visions of the law, any citizen of . Smith-.
field cognizant of the facto, is to duty
bound to himself and to • the community
in which he'lives, as well as to the, com-
menity ablarge, to see that the names of
the guilty ones are placed in the, hands of
the proper officers that the law may' pu
nish them: Hints, contained .in commu
nications to newspapers, as to what cer
tain unnamed. parties did and are doing,
is not sufficient proof -to adduce before a
jury' if the conviction of a.• criminal is de.
sired. It has been aptly remarked on
more than one occasion heretofore, that ,
" tallOs cheap, but it required money to
pay for i farm." So it is easy to write
communications to news - papers reflecting
on the characters 'of individuals, but what
constitutes evidence sufliCient •to 'convict
criminals is not., glittering generalities,.
but solid indisputable facts showing their
guilt. If our Smithfielefriends desire to
convict and .Punish any one guilty' of a
misdemeanor or crime in their commu
nity—and we sincerely belieVe 'they do
eur advice to them - is to refrain from
writing hints'and surmises ti newspapers,
and to !quietly and systematically work up
a/Übe evidence against the accused par
ty, that nothing in - that respect may be
wanting when the:else is called for trial.
And what we have written to our friends
in Smithfield, we, haye written - for all.
We want the news from.all sections of our
county, but we do not want, and will not
publish hints or insinuations against any
person, high or. low,Hai, or -poor, black
lor white. We trustthi's is explicit enough
to be intelligible to' all. - .
