As the aeason is approachini for
the setting , of fruit trees, .1- have tak
en up my pen to record a little of au
old man's experience and observa
tion.
First the selection'of soil, 'and sit
'nation. If possible select:eloping
land, East Or South, Were the trees,
will be' protected from the cold north
west ,winds. If the ground is too
moist it should be underdrained,' for
the trees will not thrive if their roots
ace continually soaked in Water.. All
sandy plains should be discarded,
when hilly land can be. had. Bould-7
era will have no disadvantage if the
soil is deep and strong,,:for I. have
seen some as 'productive orchards on
land or this description as I ever'saw
in my life,._and the land suitable for
no other, purpose but grazing.. The
land should be well plowed and,
planted with some crop for one year ;
told if new land, or where there has
never been an Orchard before, it will
want but very little irony stable mi
nor .t ; a few bushels of wood-ashes
plaster and lime are all that wilt , 'be
necessary. • ;
Distance from thirty-five to fcirty
feet will be near enough. Holes need
not be over a foot deep, but four or
five feet broad; if. a hard-pan under:.
"Leath it should - be broken, for it will,
mice's pond of water under the tree ,
and be sure death to it. When set- :
ting the tree, raise a pyramid in the
Centre of the kole,' sloping gradually; ,
to the outer edge, high enough - to set i
on the heel , of the , tree at the depth
it stood in the nursery. Afterwards
remove all the wounded roots by cuti
ding; cut back one-half the top in ,
the crown and leave what laterals
that are not wounded. Set in' the . '
tree, spread out the lateral roots, put
ini tine earth and fill up level ; don't
tread down too hard• about the roots,
of the tree, for it will get fuli, hard
enough. I have found. lobse stones'
the p est mulch, for they ill prevent
the ree from blowing ou and keep
the greund.cool. - - '
i e
From my observation •thousands
of trees' are destroYed ! very year
through the ignorance and stupidity
of the planters in selecting the soil.
In no case would I water' a tree, for
I ha.ve.never watered one in .m3r life
and I , Nave set out thousands.
Situation of trees an varieties.

Buy good trees and pay a good price
'for them; they are the cheapest in the
end. In no case Set a root r graft, for
they are worthless., If you can get
the tree's near home, it is as well to
do it, if not I think. it 'matters , but
little if ri te s oil and plaritinc , are all

right, provided you get, go d deal ,-

IThe Demand for Heavy Horse's
The Factory and Farm states a
fact. which'we hav4 observed to exist
in
[ his city for some time past, i. c;

an increase in the number of large
horses used on trucks and heavy bus
iness wagons. During- the past fif

has been a great charge in die de

Formerly nearly every one bred in
relation to speed and endurance.
Now a large proportion of farmers
breed with a view to increasing size
'and strength. This change [is nut
the result of caprice:~ There has been
a steady, increasing demand for
heavy horses. and la corresponding
falling offin the demand for light

there as many horses to a' given

Small worlr. horses 'are low; but
heavy draught horses continue to be
high.' ' [1

Feeding Trough for Poultry.
Feeding troughs for poultry;' pro
perly constructed, ought to be gener
ally substituted for the wasteful prac
tice of feeding from the ground. The
" reasons Why," are obvious. Where
there is a scramble for the. food that
is thrown helterlkelter the weak are
prevented by, the strong from getting
their share until the latter are satis- -
d and the food is trampled in the
dirt. It is no' advantage 'to fowls to;
eat sand ' , dirt or gravel mixed with
their fodd. The gravel and other in
digetitihie substances necessary to
the proper triturations of their food
in the gizzard can be given separate
and should be. A simple trough
;May be ramie, defended by slats
placed vertically or on a convenient
angle, with spaces sufficient for the
passage of the head, thus preventing
the t rampling and soiling of the food,
whiCh will not be wasted, as in the
case wher e at is . thrown carelessly on
the ground. •

sugistions on this head are also in '
order.. The Indiana -Farmer ,says
that an exPeritnent With.salt on Wheat
was made this year by James A. 31e-
Murry, of Boone County, in that
State. On, one tract he applied " re
fuse salt," Which he purchased, for
fifty cents per barrel, putting
.. it on
.at the rate of 1,000 iigunds 'to 'the •
sere on the tract ' ; on 'another, 250
poundii and the remainder of the
field, w hich contained better soil than
i
any oth r portion Silted, was left Un
touched All the , grain was sown on,
the sam day, and the plowing and
harrowi g was the same in each ease.
The res It was that the beads' ' 'from
the tracts not treated with salt were
shorter than the 'others. -The - heads
from the lands receivin g 500. and
1,000 potinds s of salt per acre were
from a half, to three-quarters of an
inch longer than those taken from
the c unsalted land, - and bad . three
grains td, the line,- while the other
generally had two, the foimer grains
also being•i heavier. The advantage
()f salt in soil is gills made apparent
to'an extent that each one may figure
out for himself.' - '
