COLONEL SANFORD'S Lecture on "Old
Times and New," at 3lercur Pall, -on
Wednesday i'evening of last ,lw6ek; was
simply magnificent. A man power, he
held his audience spell-bound, while he
gave thrilling illustrations and natratives
of old times. The ruins of Nmpeii,
Rome and Athens. The Great Wall of
China. Afterhe had succeeded in humil
iating us to tEe lowest possible ;degree by
the easy and rapid manner with which he
gave . facts and statistics of the people
who had lived two and three thousand
years ago, that they understoo'd all the arts
and sciences that v.;eof the present gener
ation knoW nothing about, besides of their
having lost arts that we may never know
about, and that them: was- nothing new
under the sun, and when we began to be
lieve that "All that is had been, and all
that had been `is," then he took . the sec
ond part of his . subject- The New, and
gave us: a new-inspiration by' snowing up
the wonders of to-day—the : inventions
that Lad taken . place since his remem
brance. The railroad; the telegraph, the' l
.telephone, etc. Things are valuable in
proportion as they arc useful. The rail
rad waslmore . useful to mankind than.
the pyramids, though of so much less pi
,pease. - Ile clo , ed by filling us i with.pride
that we lived in the present age, andl in
America. Said that as in ancient times,
to be allOnnut was a passport:to -regard .
and safety in every nation, so now the•
American flag was respected and honored
iu every country upon the face of the
earth. His second lecture, Thursday ev
evening, was China and Japan. Although
,not calculated to suggest so much of the
marvellous, was highly instructive: Its
said ati American usually supposed that
upon going to those countries, ho must
instantly turn missionary to a nation of
heathens that know nothing of work ; but
he is surprised to find that in many kinds
of industry the Chinese and .ispanese are
our superiors.. The speaker has the fa
culty of exciting one's curiosity for know
ing more about the people and, places he
so charmingly describes, and makes °tie
desire to read the history Of these strange
lands. . .

POLE RAISING AT MONROETOI.
TWO irnoVIVAND PEOPLE PRESENT.
-Notwithstanding the threatening ap
pearanee of the weather on Thursday last,
the pole raising and Mass Meeting at,
Monroeton was a decided success in every
,particular. Early in the morning the
_people began to w•semble, and at 2.
o'clock, when the pole was raised—and it
was a magnificent one, one hundred and
nine feet in length—it was estimated that
there were w,OOO people present. As the
polo assumed an upright position, and
pie streamer at its top, bearing the names
of GARFIELD and ARTHUR floated to the
breeze, cheer after cheer was given by
the _large' assemblage. After, the pole
raising the Garfield and ArthuiClub sus
pended across the Main street of the vil
lage, a large and handsome flag, bearing
the names of the Republican nominees,
and again thedarge crowd of people rent
the air with cheers. At about 2 o'clock
the people assembled on the public
square, where a platform had been erect
ed and seats provided. The President of
the Club callede meeting to order, and
in a few appro priate remarks introduced
L. M. FULL, F e m., who addressed the
assembly for about 40 minutes. His re
marks were eloquent, argumentative and
convincing, and were listened to with
the closest attention, and frequently ap
plauded.
_Ai the conclusiod of Mr.
HALL'S speech, the President introduced
11. N. Windots, Esq., who . made an
excellent and telling speech, elicitingifre
4luent ap . plause, and hearty cheers ai its
conclusion. lion. GEo. LANDON was the
last speaker, and was listened to with
eager and 'clo '
se attention. It was a mag
nificent effort, full of bristling
, points,
logical conclusions, convincing arguments
and matchless eloquence. No synopsis
could do it justice, as a whole. .It was a
speech that carried -conviction to those
who listened to it. At the conclusion of
Mr. Lsx pox's remarks, the Liberty
Corners and Monroeton bands, who had
contributed much to the enjoymert of the
day, by their excellent music, played
several pieces, when the meeting with
hearty cheers for the ticket, adjourned.

MYRA. 11.mosnunv, of Sheshequin, Pa.,

that has been in that church for
years. Many of our best citizens were
present, of all denominations, and were

of the lungs, but as it was slight, thought
but little of it, and that day went over to
attend his mother's anniversary gathering

and the next morning had another pro
fuse bemorbage, which was followed by
quite a number more each day until yes

entertained of his recovery.. His daughter,
Mrs. 5: L. KEENEY, who was at Saratoga,
was telegraphed for as soon as it was
found that her , father's condition was:
dangerous, and she immediately hastened
to his bedside. Soon after her arrival she
was stricken down with a heart affection,
and for several days* lay in a precarious
condition. We are pleased to state that
she, too, is recovering now, and it is now
thought both will entirely recover.— nk

'Very pleasant•party assembled at the resi

The occasion which brought the company
together was the marriage of Mr. FEE'S
eldest daughter, Miss EMMA, to Mr. •C.
D. Lyox, a telegraph operator of Waver

trimmed with flowers and evergreens ;
the guests were numerous, and the bridal

tied by Rev. DAVID CRAFT, in his . usual
happy manner. •Among the guests were
Req. P. D. Moiuton and family—the
Judge being an uncle of the bride. The
young hus'bind has given evidence of
commendable and piactical forethoughti
in providing a cosy and neatly furnished
Homo for his bride in Waverly, where
they will at once set up housekeeping,
and enter upon the• solid comforts 'of
married life. It was.a matter of-general
remark last evening by those. who had
the pleasure of being present and meeting
Mr. and Mrs. tLirOx, that they seemed
most happilymated, and they carry with
them to their new home the best wishes
l of a host of friends: The good people of
Waverly are to be eongmtulated on the
acquisition of the fair and accomplished
young bride to their social eircles.-14-

and se Ting a long train of wagons
with their Ally freight of children and
young people passing in to the Lake near
the residence of Mr. Lit.Nox, on inquiry I
learned that it was the Sabbath Schools
of. Moufltain Lake and Maury Grove
going to the Lake for a picnic. Won't
you go with us?" asked my informant.
" There wilt be enough fur all that will
come." -And judging from the Sight of
their wellffilled baskets I could not doubt
his word: ' I consented, hiving a desire
to ,see the Lake from that side. After
listening to some . very tine music from the
West Burlington Cornet Band, we were
called inside the summer house, where
we listened to some appropriate remarks
from the Rev. PAta. SMITU, of Burling
ton. Then we were served with our din
ner, and such a dinner a king might envy.
And then-to the Llke for a ride in the
boats. I observed with pleasure the quiet
deportment of the young people, of whom
there were not a few. .God bless them !
May they glide down the stream of life as
smoothly as did their boats on the Lake.
